I reinstalled XP about a week ago and windows explorer keeps crashing every now and then. It seems like it occurs whenever i open a folder with video files in it. If I reboot, and try to access the folder again, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Other times the error occurs on different folders (ie i can't access folder a, but can access folder b. after rebooting i can access folder a but can't access folder b).

The following is what i see in event viewer:

Event id 1000
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00018fea.

I've searched the internet along with this forum and saw many people with similiar errors, but they're solutions have not helped.

I've turned off DEP for ntdll.dll, run virus scan, uninstalled divx, ran sfc, got all the updates including sp2, and ran chkdsk. I don't have any system restore points to go to and I really don't want to keep reinstalling xp because i think i'm low on activations.

Any help would be appreciated.

Windows XP Explorer has a 'feature' to provide a preview in the Details box on the left of the file you have selected, if it’s supported. Image files, HTML pages, video clips, MP3s, etc are all previewed (even with the folder view open).

If you have a large movie clip and it either is corrupt (ie. no index from a partial download) or it uses an unsupported codec, then Explorer tries to load the whole file. This can slow your computer a lot and prevent deleting/renaming/moving/etc the file until it’s finished.

Simply do the following:

• Go to START-->RUN and type regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll and hit ENTER.
• A window will pop up saying that the file has been unregistered successfully. (If you don't receive this window, or the window gives an error, then please post that in your reply.)
• Reboot your computer and see if the problem persists.
