OS: WinXP

This seemed to start when I noticed somebody taking over my laptop via remote desktop or something. I immediately shut off the machine, rebooted, and saw somebody again come in over vnc (saw the icon change color). This time, shut off remote desktop, checked/changed password on vnc. There was an extra file that was dangerous according to Google, and removed it. Since then, I have not seen any remote desktop take-overs (I use it myself to get to the machine remotely - almost always over a vpn and/or via tunneling to another machine via ssh, as explained on the realvnc site. must have slipped or something).

I have downloaded a bunch of stuff that takes up a lot of space, such as CentOS5 - so it is possible that part of this is normal operation of the PC. However, I removed at least 2G of space from my temp directory and slowly watched that space get filled up again, to where I have less than 1M on my hard drive, and it has been 0 a few times (re-booting gives me a reduced pagefile.sys so I can get to the machine).

Running AVG listed one high-priority virus that it subsequently removed (can't remember the name - it truly didn't find it when I re-ran it). Ad-Aware didn't find anything. For some reason, Panda won't run.

chkdsk /f /r came back clean (no bad sectors).

Bottom line: I'm not positive whether I really have a problem or it's truly a function of my filling up the drive beyond where XP can comfortably run - at least for now. I do have more I can remove from the drive, but am reluctant to do so until I understand why all free space gets eaten up.

ps: I keep my browser cache cleaned ("clear private data" in firefox, and manually clean cookies and temporary files the few times I use IE). Also, I haven't used this machine to get to email in a few days, and don't think I have logs that fill up that fast.

Basically, 1G got eaten up within 1 - 2 days while I was elsewhere. So while my pagefile.sys was small and nowhere near the upper range, I noticed the size of free space shrinking while my pagefile.sys was not increasing.

Thanks!
