Hi-
This is my first time here.
My PC has 2 external hard drives for storage obviously, When I attempted to access a particular folder it will freeze that particular folder. I'll open the task manager and it'll say that the folder is not responding, I'll then terminate the task.
I run spybot, ad-adware SE & Super antispyware regularly. I have Zone Alarm Security Suite 7.
Since this problem occurred I checked this site and have run all the steps involved in the Malware Removal Section.
I'm at the part where I am to post the contents of the Hijackthis. log.
Here it is:

Hello Sirius Black

Welcome to G2Go. :whistling:

I don't really see any malware in your logs besides some minor things like cookies and one toolbar.

Plesase re-open Hijackthis and place a check mark next to these entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - Global Startup: run_startmenu.cmd
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Now click on Fix Checked and then close Hiajckthis.

Next Right click on Start and choose Explore.

Navigate to this location and delete this file:

K:\Software Downloads\Nero 7 Ultra\Nero-7.8.5.0_eng_update.exe[Toolbar.exe]

this file is probably within a .zip folder or some kind of an archive.
Only delete that file.

Then go to start >run type in Cookies then delete everything in there except the index.dat file.
Then delete all of the items in your recycle bin.

After that you can try to fix the DR.Watson error by doing this.
Go to Start > Run type in this chkdsk /f /r it will ask you to run it at next reboot and type in Y.
Reboot and then let it run it will take a while.
Please post back with a new Hijackthis log. Also Please when posting make sure that Word Wrap is not checked.
You can check this by going to Format>Word Wrap (When you save a hijackthis log with Notepad it will be at the top of the page.)

Hi-
Thanks for getting back.
I did exactly as you have requested however, when I went to delete the cookies there wasn't an index.dat file there.
Otherwise everything else went well.
One thing I didn't mention earlier (sorry), when I boot the PC I'll get a message that states "INVALID BOOT.INI FILE" then "Boot from WINDOWS/:C"
It starts up fine, just something I noticed. Not sure if thats relevant to whats happening here.

Here is the updated log file you've requested.

Hello Sirius Black sounds like your Boot ini file is corrupt.
Go Here and see if that doesn't fix your problem.

Other than that I see nothing malware related in your logs.
Did the chkdsk fix the other problem.?

Unfortunately no, after I ran through your second set of instructions, posted the new log and rebooted the PC the first thing I checked was the offending folder and it is still locking up . The folder itself is a set of digital photographs taken on a trip to Las Vegas.
All the other folders containing pictures open just fine except for this one. I copied that folder from the external hard drive onto the PC itself to see if for some reason that would do the trick but to no avail.

A few of the files in that particular folder open with Adobe Photoshop CS2 because they are of the PSD. type used for editing.
I do appreciate the effort put forth in helping me with this. I just assumed that it was probably related to a virus or other type of insidious malicious
program.

One quick question, concerning the check disk task that I performed with the PC, does it check the externals as well? Does it matter?
I am looking at the link you provided just as soon as I'm done with this reply.
I will reply after I've run through the steps concerning the INVALID BOOT.INI message.
Thanks.

Hi-
I read through the link you posted and proceeded through some of the steps but couldn't figure out how to boot from the Windows XP CD until later.
I ended up starting the Recovery Console and selected the second option (Non-destructive) or so I thought. Needless to say it fixed the drwtsn problem I was having but had to reinstall everything else that was on there prior to. Good thing I keep all my photos on the externals.

Thanks for taking the time to go through all this.
The wealth of information on this site is absolutely indispensable.

You are very welcome.

Your all set. :whistling:

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

Spybot Search & Destroy-Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

Ad-Aware-Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

Spyware Blaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

Sywareguard-Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

IE-SPYAD- puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Cleanup-Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

Google- Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.

Trillian or Miranda-These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

Castle Cops To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.
