I did a clean install on my wife's pc. XP Pro w/SP2.
We use broadband from a cable company.
The install went OK. I didn't notice anything wrong.
But about 3 hours after I was done I did a re-boot and the OS just kept looping on and off.
I shut it down and went into safe mode which worked, but then found I could no longer access the internet.
All connections looked ok but nothing worked right.
This afternoon I tried to stay out of divorce court by doing the OS install again.
It went smoothly just like yesterday.
But when I was done I had no internet connectivity.
The cable company support people talked me through using the CMD prompts and we got nowhere. This machine had no IP address.
Support finally admitted they were licked and wished me well.
I tried one more thing.
I hooked up my router and installed Network Magic free version.
At first, nothing. But on the second attempt it was able to get me an IP address.
But now I get occasional pop ups from Windows and from Network Magic saying that I have lost my connection. And then the connection comes back.
Can anybody help me with this?
It's way over my head.
Thanks.
J.

Have you checked for new drivers for NIC? Have you checked the Event Viewer in Administrative Tools, located in the Control Panel? If there are errors please list the last 4 errors.

as acklan suggested I'd definatly look for updated network card drivers and also if you didn't already you could try running the windows xp internet connection wizard. also try the network cable on a different computer to make sure its not the cable. and try disabling windows firewall.

good luck

Thank you everybody.
Apparently it was the driver for the NIC.
At this time the pc is OK and I'm not writing any alimony checks.
Regards.
