every so often, when i press start and open internet explorer or open windows media player, the start bar freezes. then when i restart or shut off the computer, it would say explorer.exe is not responding, end now or cancel. however, if that doesnt happen to me, the computer restarts or shuts off no problem whatsoever. how can i check for the problem?

You should read the guide carefully. You will be burning memtest as an ISO to a CD or to a floopy. You boot with the floppy or CD and change the boot order in the BIOS as needed.
