IPOD Shuffle and Audio configuratio

Two days ago I downloaded songs to my Shuffle. Today I tried to go to Itunes and the computer gave me a message that it couldn't open Itunes due to my audio configuration. This apparently happened overnight with NOBODY touching the computer. Is there a fix? How could this occur without anyone fooling with it? If this is posted on the wrong section I apologize. :whistling:
