pc wont detect dvd-r

my pc wont detect dvd-r and it has a dvd-r cd combo do i have to install any drivers so it can detect dvd-r's or what?
when i first got my pc 3 years ago it had no problem but since then i have reinstalled my os so i think that i need to install something?.............. :whistling:

Windows XP should pick this up fine, so it sounds like your combo drive is on the way out. Optical drives are usually one of the first components to die in a computer.

yes it used to work but now it dosent so thats why i am wondering why it dosent work now?.........
