I read the FAQ. I get a red triangle in the system tray and a pop warning about malware. Specifically a pop warns of a Trojan Adware.W32.ExpDwnldr infection. Every once in a while IE will launch on it's own and go to various Web sites claim to deal with malware. udefender.com is commonly accessed.

I've installed, updated and run the latest Spybot Search and Destroy (since removed), Adaware, AVG antivirus, AVG anti-spyware and AVG anti-rootkit. I also tried the latest PC-cillin with the latest updates, but the red triangle and the browser hijacking keeps happening.

I even used msconfig to start up in safe mode and ran all of the above again but still no change.

I tried to use msconfig to disable startup items but each time the nvcpl startup item would appear as added to the list upon restart.

Windows Update seems to report everything as being updated except for Office, which had an error while the updater ran (it reported not being able to find a file).

Here is my log file:

Hi guilicious,

Let's make a start on this clean up operation.

First, I need you to download some tools that we will use for your fix. Save them to your Desktop

SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Deckard's System Scanner

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present). It is saved as C:\rapport.txt
Please copy/paste the content of that file into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Update AVG Anti-Spyware:
  • Start AVG Anti-Spyware
  • On the main screen select Update then select the Update now link.
    • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine.
  • Under Reports
    • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
    • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode.
    • Restart your computer and tap the F8 key, repeatedly until a menu appears.
    • Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit Enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
    • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
    • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it as C:\avg_as.txt
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode

Run Deckard's System Scanner:
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double click on the dss.exe file on your Desktop and follow the prompts.
  • Scans will run, and 2 text files will open in Notepad.
  • Close both of the text files.
These files are C:\Deckard\System Scanner\main.txt & extra.txt. I will need you to copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Also please paste the text from C:\rapport.txt and C:\avg_as.txt

The text from these files may exceed the maximum post length for this forum, and may need to be sent over 2 or more posts. Please ensure all text is posted.

Cheers,

sage5

Hi guilicious,

Thanks for those logs, but in future, it is easier to see the "timeline" of events, in a fix, if you post your responses into a new Reply

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.
Please work through these steps in order, and in your Reply, tell me if you had any problems.

SmitfraudFix Step 2:
Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process. Please save it as C:\rapport_2.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Clean up Registry with a Reg file:
  • Please open a new Notepad file by clicking Start\All Programs\Accessories\Notepad
  • Copy the text from the following Code box, by highlighting all the text and right click, Select Copy. (or use the Ctrl+C keyboard shortcut)
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad]
"iedns"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{C4CB692E-B269-4A54-AE5F-076E7337D132}]
  • Paste it into Notepad. Right click in the window and select Paste. (or use Ctrl+V)
  • Save the file to the Desktop, make sure Type is All Files, and name it Fixreg.reg
  • Double click on the file created and click Yes when asked to merge the information into the Registry
Delete bad services:
Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad.
Save it to your desktop, make sure the file type is All File and name it FixServices.bat

@echo off
sc stop EraserUtilRebootDrv
sc delete EraserUtilRebootDrv
exit
Double click FixServices.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

Run HijackThis.
  • Click the Do a system scan only button.
  • Check the boxes for the all the entries listed below:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://gomyron.com/NjU2NA==/2/3560/hp/
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {96b2b8e4-a614-4fc5-b1b3-ac7130841682} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\c_8Nic.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A8F38D8D-E480-4D52-B7A2-731BB6995FDD} - (no file)
O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O20 - AppInit_DLLs:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: c_8Nic - c_8Nic.dll (file missing)
O21 - SSODL: msdns - {2CF1D949-9A37-4E22-AA82-9EF8AEC88B1F} - (no file)
O21 - SSODL: iedns - {C4CB692E-B269-4A54-AE5F-076E7337D132} - C:\WINDOWS\iedns.dll
  • Now close all windows other than HijackThis and click Fix Checked.
  • Close HijackThis.
Reboot into Safe Mode:
  • Restart your Computer
  • As soon as it starts to boot up, tap your F8 key repeatedly.
  • This should bring up the Windows Advanced Options Menu.
  • Use your arrow keys to select Safe Mode and click the Enter key.
Remove folders & files:
  • Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove any application you do not recognise, or did not load.
  • Using Windows Explorer, (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), delete these files, (if present):
    C:\WINDOWS\iedns.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\msdns.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\c_8Nic.dll
Shut down & Reboot normally:

You don't appear to be running a 3rd party firewall. These are essential to protect from trojans, viruses, spyware etc.
You should check out:- Comodo Firewall Pro or Kerio
Both are simple to install & free to use.
Please install only 1

Remove Symantec remnants:
Go to http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
for instructions and a tool to remove left over traces of Nortons applications.

Remove msconfig restrictions:
Go to Start > Run and type msconfig and hit Enter
On the Startup page click the Enable All button and click OK to exit.

Re-run Deckard's System Scanner:
Can you browse to the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder and rename main.txt to main_1.txt
Then re-reun DSS.exe. It will create a new version of main.txt.
Paste the text from: main.txt & C:\rapport_2.txt as your next Reply

Cheers,

I needed to hand this PC back to my friend and have it be as clean as possible for her so I chose to proceed on my own with SmitFraudFix. I chose item 2, 3 and eventually 5 to clean things up. The red triangle in the system tray and the fake malware alert window no longer pop up. Here are the relevant logs after running the SmitFraudFix.

So my remaining question is this: is the nvsvc32.exe a legitimate and necessary NVIDIA file or is it malware. A Sophos posting makes me wonder if it's part of a Trojan:

Help with this would be very appreciated. Thank you.

Hi guilicious,

I needed to hand this PC back to my friend ...

If you still have access to that PC we can continue the fix.

Please advise.

If not, please inform your friend that there is still plenty to do to clean that PC properly.
She will need to go to http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Must-Read-Before-Posting-Hijackthis-Log-t2852.html and click the "Register" link and then post to the
Malware Removal - HiJackThis™ Logs Go Here forum.

If you no longer have access to the PC in question, there isn't much more I can do for you.

Yes, that nvsvc32.exe is legitimate:
The first 2 links refer to a file called nvsvc.exe (not nvsvc32.exe)
The 3rd, if it were on "your" PC would be located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\nvsvc32.exe (not C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe)

Thanks sage5. I will indeed get access to this PC again and will follow the instructions you gave on your previous post (looks like I just missed seeing them before I proceeded on my own). You've been very helpful and I appreciate it.

Hi guilicious,

Because of the extended time period here, we almost need to restart from scratch.

Download Deckard's System Scanner and save it to your Desktop

Run Deckard's System Scanner:
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double click on the dss.exe file on your Desktop and follow the prompts.
  • Scans will run, and 2 text files will open in Notepad.
  • Close both of the text files.
These files are C:\Deckard\System Scanner\main.txt & extra.txt. I will need you to copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

The text from these files may exceed the maximum post length for this forum, and may need to be sent over 2 or more posts. Please ensure all text is posted.

Also, please tell me how the PC is running, be as specific as you can with any problems.

Cheers,

sage5

Hi Sage5,

Thanks again for the help. The PC *seems* to be running fine at this point. The System Configuration Utility still loads at startup, "Selective Startup" is set with everything underneath it checked and "Use Modified Boot.INI" selected. Under the "Startup" tab all Startup Items are checked.

As per your instructions I ran DSS. The main.txt and extra.txt files where not exactly where you said but I did find them in C:\Deckard\System Scanner\20071126095409 (corresponding with the date I ran DSS). I'm quoting the files below:

Hi guilicious,

It is actually a whole lot better than I thought it was going to be. :)

Let's get the last of these bad guys cleaned out so you can be on your way.

Please print these instructions, and have the hard copy handy, to complete the steps below.

Run HijackThis.
  • Click the Do a system scan only button.
  • Check the boxes for the all the entries listed below:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SemanticInsight] C:\Program Files\RXToolBar\Semantic Insight\SemanticInsight.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10\bin\ssv.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10\bin\ssv.dll
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: secuload.dll,[/b]
  • Now close all windows other than HijackThis and click Fix Checked.
  • Close HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode:
  • Restart your Computer
  • As soon as it starts to boot up, tap your F8 key repeatedly.
  • This should bring up the Windows Advanced Options Menu.
  • Use your arrow keys to select Safe Mode and click the Enter key.

Remove folders & files:
  • Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following, (if present):
    RXToolBar
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_02

Please take note of any other programs that you don't recognise in that list, and include them in your next response
  • Using Windows Explorer, (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), delete these folders, (if present):
    C:\Program Files\RXToolBar
  • Delete these files, (if present):
    C:\Windows\System32\secuload.dll

Shut down & Reboot normally:

Clean up Registry with a Reg file:
  • Please open a new Notepad file by clicking Start\All Programs\Accessories\Notepad
  • Copy the text from the following Code box, by highlighting all the text and right click, Select Copy. (or use the Ctrl+C keyboard shortcut)
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
"{25D8BACF-3DE2-4B48-AE22-D659B8D835B0}"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\RXToolBar.TBInfo.1]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\RXToolBar]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\RX Toolbar]
  • Paste it into Notepad. Right click in the window and select Paste. (or use Ctrl+V)
  • Save the file to the Desktop, make sure Type is All Files, and name it Fixreg.reg
  • Double click on the file created and click Yes when asked to merge the information into the Registry

Shut down & Reboot normally:

Your Java was out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Ugrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3.
  • Click on the Free Java Download button.
  • Click the "Download Now" button.
  • Follow the prompts to install the latest version for your Browser.

Return to Normal Startup:
Go to Start > Run and type msconfig
Click the Normal Startup option and click OK.
At the prompt, click the Restart button.

Run HijackThis again:
  • Select the Run a system scan and save a logfile button. The logfile will open in Notepad.
  • Start your Web Browser and navigate back to this thread.
  • Click the Add Reply button
  • Copy and Paste the text into the Reply window.
Please include a note to tell me how your PC is running now.

Cheers,

sage5

The PC seems to be running fine other than problems with Windows Updates. This is my friend's PC and I'm not sure what's going on with "WGA". Over a year ago she had someone updated her from XP Home to XP Pro, for what reasons neither of us is sure. We've found her original XP Home disc that came with this Dell but we haven't found the XP Pro disc. I did notice upon the last reboot (after telling msconfig to use a normal startup) that I was given a choice of XP Home or XP Pro to boot. I chose XP Pro since that's been the only OS installation I've worked on with this PC.

I'll tried running Windows Update again. It installed the WGA update, the IE 7 update and failed on the Office 2003 update with an error message saying a certain resource was on a network drive not present (I wasn't too concerned about this). The WGA update says that this PC's installation failed the WGA test.

My friend Jenny has since bought a new iMac, we've transfered her files over and she's interested in gifting this PC to her parents. These are the 4 choices I see we have for dealing with this PC before handing it over to Jenny's parents--would you please let me know what you think about them?:

1) reboot into the Windows XP Home installation I saw in the startup option screen and see if we can update that copy of Windows. I'm concerned that there may be more malware lurking in that installation that would not have been affected by the work you and I have done on this PC so far. Is this possible?

There is software on this PC that she doesn't have the installers for. Would booting into the XP Home installation still give us access to the apps we see in this installation?

2) load the original XP Home CD, wipe the hard drive (there is such an option from an XP install CD isn't there?), reinstall XP Home, run through countless Windows Updates and forget about the 3rd party software that was on here that's not readily available to us, and reinstall 3rd party stuff we can download.

3) run Windows XP Pro *unpatched*. This seems like a recipe for disaster. What do you think?

4) pay MS $149 for XP Pro license or however much it would cost for Vista (not even sure if it would run on this hardware). I'm not sure what the average set of baby boomer+ parents need in XP Pro (or Vista, if that's even an option) that's not in XP Home. Does XP Pro give 60 somethings anything they *need* that XP Home doesn't?

Any recommendations as to how to handle this?

Thank you so much,
Guilicious

Hi guilicious,

This is always a tough decision.
If the PC is to be gifted to someone anyway, I think I would go with option 2.
It sounds as if the XP Pro install may have complicated the registry on this box.
While official support for XP Home runs out shortly, there is very little difference between the 2, so help with Home should not be hard to find.
You could even point then to the various other sections of G2G , such as the Operating System, Software & Hardware forums.

You will be pleasantly surprised at how well the PC runs, with a fresh install.

Install a good anti-virus, firewall & anti-spyware, if the folks will be using it on-line, and be prepared to provide a bit of support early in the piece.
My recommendations would be as follows:
Anti-virus: Either Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition PremiumAvira AntiVir PersonalEdition Premium or ESET NOD32® Antivirus 3.0 If you use the paid for versions, they will update automatically.
Firewall: Comodo Firewall Pro (free) but you need to use the "simple" setup option, or the pop-ups are too frequent.
Anti-spyware: AVG Free. Must be manually updated, but it is not as critical as the Anti-virus.
Spyware Blaster. freeware. Fantastic little app to block spyware from installing.

All the best,

sage5
