Hours of attempts, to no avail . . .

Running Windows xp on an hp pavilion a336n. Lost connection to internet during a storm yesterday.

Wired connection -- straight from cable modem to ethernet port.

Device manager shows ethernet controller not working, and attempts to reinstall drivers have failed.

Please help?

In device manager, the "other devices" has "ethernet controller" listed with an exclamation point on it.

Right click --> Properties -- Devices Status states "this device is not configured correctly. code 1. To reinstall the drivers for this device, click reinstall driver."

So, I do that, and it can't find it on my machine. So I found the driver and downloaded it to my flash drive, unzipped it to my desktop on the non-working pc and tried to install, but it says that the driver is not found.

From searching online to see what brand the ethernet controller is for this brand of pc, I found the driver on the realtek site.

If you click the + next to network adapters, does it have a make and model, and any marks?

Network adapters -- says, "Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC" -- and device status is that "this device is working properly."
Right under that is the Other devices, "ethernet controller" -- and it has the question mark on it with a yellow exlamation point on it. No brand names or model.

I may not have done that right, but here's what I did --

Downloaded to flash drive on this working laptop.
Moved flash drive to non-working desktop, and unzipped files off the flash drive onto a folder on the desktop.
Through device manager -- selected ethernet controller.
Right clicked on that, chose properties, then driver tab.
Clicked update driver, which launched the update wizard.
Said, no, don't look on the damned internet because clearly I can't connect to the internet. (LOL)
Clicked next to continue.

Selected "Install from a specific location"
Navigated to the location on my desktop . . .
Clicked next . . . and then the wizard said "cannot intall this hardware because the wizard cannot find the necessary software."

So, am I using the wrong driver? Installing wrong? Completely flipping insane????

Okay, did that and it went through the install and said it completed.

Device manager still shows the question mark.

Should I restart?

Did the storm shut the PC off?

Power outage turned off power for about 10 seconds, then everything came back up.

I'm restarting now.

It just came back up, Keith, with the Found New Hardware Wizard, which I've been through many many times now with the same result . . . it doesn't find the driver.

All it says is "Ethernet Controller" . . . could I be using the wrong driver??? I would think it would give me a brand name or something!

I am so frustrated by this.

Click next, if it asks for drivers, point it to the setup.exe

Or it may say your hardware is installed and ready for use after a bit
