Hi, im running a dell dimension 4600 and just today there is no sound from my speakers. I tried re-installing my driver, checked to see if it's muted, checked BIOS. It was working yesterday... Any help would be great

It often happens that Windows due to some reason changes the output and input channels, so may want to check if Sound Playback device is set correctly. Also make sure that playback program you're using (Winamp, Media Player, etc) is configured to use the right device. Lastly, check the speaker's cable, if it's correctly and firmly plugged in, if speakers are ON.
You may run a dxdiag (Start-->Run, type "dxdiag" without quotes and press enter. This will run series of tests to ensure all multimedia devices are OK.

Also check the Device Manager -- if there's a red exclamation mark or yellow question mark for audio device or unknown device, then you either didn't install the driver correctly or installed the wrong one. If nothing is flagged up as having a problem in Device Manager then it isn't a driver issue. Either the sound-chip on the motherboard is faulty (fit a new sound card), or your speakers are faulty (test this by replacing with known working speakers if you can lay your hands on a pair to borrow).

Hi Kelly Wright, can you tell me how to check my Sound Playback device and playback programs? I'm using Media Player and iTunes

I tested directsound on dxdiag and i had this
DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (User verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)

I plugged my sister's speakers into my computer and there was no sound too.

Also, forgot to mention that my speaker makes a static/fuzzy noise when i turn it up.

Control Panel --> Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices. There are several tabs like audio, hardware. In the Audio tab there are two pull-down menus, Sound Playback and Sound Recording. The first one lists the device used to play sounds If there's any, than it's good. If there is none, then it's not that bad. You really need to install drivers.
But as far as dxdiag reports an error there's something to be done with installation of drivers (and/or perhaps DirectX)
Also, the cause may be related to games.

Sound playback is on SoundMAX Digital Audio. I don't play games, just watch movies online and stuff.

So, I suppose it's SoundMax soundcard, integrated onboard. Now we need to somehow identify it more exactly.
In that very properties windows (Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices) click on Hardware tab. There are your cd/dvd burners listed, audio/video codecs, webcam, etc. Find something that contains 'soundmax' in the title. Select it an click Properties, than go to Driver tab. Normally Windows gives info like Driver provider, Driver version, etc.
Windows XP offers a driver rollback feature, but I don't suggest you use it now. Assuming the drivers installed are the first in the current Windows system, there's nothing to roll back to.

Looks like this is what you need. It's a 7 megs download .exe file.
There are two ways to install the driver. 1. to double-click the file and install like any software 2. extract the contents and then point Hardware Wizard to that folder so that it pick up the necessary info and do what's supposed to do. Somehow I prefer the second... but it shouldn't matter a lot. Install drivers any way you like.

There is an obscure cause for this, one of the Windows updates will cause Soundmax not to work. There is a later update which solves the problem. There is a Microsoft KB article about this problem. Also on some systems you need the Microsoft Advanced Audio Architecture Drivers for the device drivers to work.

Hi Dann, your problem appears to be a bit more complicated than I would expect.
If you made sure that Audio is enabled in BIOS, you may as well check if Audio Service is enabled in Windows.
To check if the audio service is on, got to CONTROL PANEL, ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, SERVICES. Scroll down to the bottom of the page that appears and look for Windows Audio. Right click on this and pick properties. Under STARTUP TYPE on window that appears, select AUTOMATIC. Under SERVICE STATUS, click START.
Then you may reboot just to be on the safe side.
Now, you should make sure that the Device Manager does not list erroneous devices (Audio Controller, namely).
If there is an exclamation (!) mark left to Multimedia device, right-click and choose uninstall. To make things simple. just reboot. Windows should locate the drivers it needs, or ask for Internet connection to check against Microsoft website.
One more think that deserves attention is the choice of speakers in Control Panel. XP offers all kinds of speakers (like desktop, keyboard, monitor, etc). Choose desktop stereo in case there's something else selected.
Before we make hardware work, there's little sense to configure software players.

As far as I remember, it doesn't require installation. Just double click the .exe file. It'll scan the system and produce a list. Please post here the section with Unknown Devices. Or just paste in a screenshot.
The reason I'm suggesting this is that after research on different forums I expect DELL to be using different motherboards, and not just those listed on their website. That is, you may need a driver other than the one listed on dell website (which I suggested you to install).
BTW, is your XP updated with SP1/SP2? If this whole problem is due to some MS update as Tyger suggested, you may want to use Windows Update/Microsoft Update to see if it finds some fixes for your Windows installation.

This is getting weird. I've searched thru about a dozen forums, and there are no solutions listed whatsoever. We oughta be the first to fix the problem
Dann, please include a screenshot of the Device Manager with Multimedia devices unfolded. I'm just getting curious.
Second, download a DirectX from Microsoft. http://www.microsoft...indows/directx/
This may come in hand.
Third, grab Intel drivers from http://downloadcente...c...al&lang=eng
Have you checked Windows Audio Service, is it set to start automatically?
Also, you may check Setting-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Event Viewer. What is of interest here are Application Log and System Log. There may be some warnings or errors related to audio or multimedia. Just see if there are some.

I downloaded the directX and intel drivers. Windows Audio Service is set to start automatically and there doesn't seem to be any errors in event log that relates to audio or media.
