Hi,

I have a strange problem where my computer restarts itself every time I switch it off. Also, my AVG reports as being in an error state every time I log into windows and requires another restart to function again.

Apart from this my computer dosent seem to be misbehaving much, but I assume it is a virus of some sort since that has turned out to be the case every time Ive had an inexplicable problem in the past.

Here is my HiJackThis log:

Hello chooby and sorry for the delay

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Hi don77,

I believe you helped me before, thanks again heh. Dont worry about the delay, by the looks of all the caps locks and exclamation marks on the malware thread pages there were plenty in greater need than I. :whistling:

Ok then, I followed your instructions and here are the two logs:

We appreciate your patience :whistling:

I m fairly certain that this is a windows issue and not malware but lets just be sure nothing is hiding on us

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi don77,

I ran the scan and found a few things.
I had one problem: It would not scan the K: folder, or at least was taking a ludicrously long time on it. Its always been like that, it seems to be some kind of shared drive (?) that contains lots of massive editing programs for our Mac. Im pretty sure there no problem there as when it has managed to be scanned in the past ( took leaving a scan running overnight ) it was always fine.

If you need the K: folder too or I missed anywhere else just let me know how to do it and Ill get down to it.

So I manually chose to scan everything but that folder, and here are the results:

Assuming you know what this is
C:\Documents and Settings\Shane\My Documents\former desktop items\vnc-4_1_1-x86_win32.exe
There is another associated with it
Also mIrc is flagging
The rest are infected restore points that we can flush out later no need to scan the K if you know whats in there

Are you getting any error messages or does the machine just restart ?

Hi,

That file:

C:\Documents and Settings\Shane\My Documents\former desktop items\vnc-4_1_1-x86_win32.exe

I had no idea heh, and had to check - its a program for remote assistance apparently. I remember my bro used it when getting help from a friend to do something a long time ago. I'm not too comfortable about having it still sitting there now that I know about it, if it is infected or any potential security risk I can get rid of it since its never used.

I dont know what mIrc "flagging" means exactly, but I use mIrc quite regularly.

---------------------------------------------------

I dont get any kind of error message: It shuts down as normal and simply kicks back into life within 5-10 seconds.

mIrc is coming up as infected which we know its not
Go ahead and delete the file from your desk top
vnc-4_1_1-x86_win32.exe

see if there is an entry for it in add/remove thyen delete the folder
C:\Program Files\RealVNC

Click the Start button, right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.

Under System Failure, view the Automatically restart check box. If checked uncheck it and restart the computer let me know if you get an error message

Hi,

I deleted

vnc-4_1_1-x86_win32.exe

with add/remove programs. There was no RealVNC folder in Program files afterwards but there was a few connected bits and bobs around the place (VNC viewer , VNC setup etc). So I manually deleted anything remotely (pardon the pun) connected to it.

The automatically restart check box was unchecked. I restarted and received no error message.
I tried a shutdown again and the usual spontaneous restart happened.

---------------------------------------------

Note: When you said "Click the Start button, right-click My Computer", I couldnt do it that way but instead needed to click My Computer on the desktop. The point being that our start menu is a tad truncated, I think from a misguided attempt to simplify the clutter on our system and speed up our start up process.

Related to this I think, is that the items which appear on our taskbar on Startup - the icons on the bottom right of the screen - are essentially random each time. Sometimes 8-10 programs appear there, sometimes none, and any amount in between. For example AVG may or may not choose to appear there ( and may or may not be greyed out when it does ), but simply clicking on the desktop icon causes it to pop up immeditately.

It seems we have some messed up settings somewhere, probably as a result of ill advised meddling. Nothing that has been done lately though, so it would be hard to explain this recent problem as being a direct result of it.

------------------------------------------------------

When browsing around for anything mentioning my problem on the net, as you can imaginethere was 1,000 and 1 different explanations and soluions being bandied about. A recurring one however, was that the drivers for a visual program ( usually a CD creator ) had spontaneously began acting up and caused it.

I seem to have any number of redundant visual programs that do the same thing, so if it turns out to be relevant I would have no compunction in getting rid of anything that might be needed. Probably needs clearing out anyway, Ive never even heard of most of these programs we have let alone used them.

-------------------------------------------------------

Well, I'll stop rambling, just trying to give you some background to the mystery affliction lol.

Cheers :whistling:

OK these are the only ones I can tell you you can safely remove you will need to add the ones that your not using anymore after you remove the programs and restart the computer ets see a fresh uninstall list

Click on start, then control panel, and then double-click on add/remove programs. From within add/remove program uninstall the following if they exist by double-clicking on the following entries:

ewido anti-malware
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Hi,

Oh, sorry I simply deleted those programs and reported back heh.

The problem is still there yes. I havent really deleted anything else, I dont much like blundering around ruining things without instruction. There is a few programs I intend getting rid of though, once I work out exactly where they are.

Ill try it tomorrow. I'll delete a few and maybe run a few by you, to find out whether some of them are not needed.

Cheers :whistling:
