outlook express email attachments can't be opened

I have windows xp and outlook express for email. I can open a email with no attachments but when I try to open one with an attachment I get this message, This file does not have a program associated with it for perfroming this action. Create an association in the Folder Options contro panel. Now mind you I use to be able to open these attachments. What can I do to get this back in working order? Kirny1
