IP Address conflict

Every once in awhile I have to re-set the modem on my Dell Desktop When this happens the wireless Link system router will send a message that says that another ip address has been detected on this computer and it might cause a conflict.

How exactly do I resolve that problem?

1: Disable DHCP function in the router. Look in the user manual how to enter the router settings.

2: Give the computer a fixed IP. Go to Control Panel > network connections. Double click the wireless connection > properties > mark tcp/ip > properties > check Use the Following Address.

In IP address write something like 10.0.0.1
In Subnet Mask write 255.255.255.0
In Default Getway write the IP with which you enterd the router menu.

Click OK > OK

Well, that would work but there may be an underlying issue. First off is this a wireless network? If so you need to make sure that your wireless connection is secure and that someone outside is not using your wireless resources. This could be the cause of the conflict. The other persons PC pulls the same IP that your system had and vice versa and you get the conflict.

If it isn't a wireless network then are there other systems connected to your network? If so you need to verify what their IP addresses are, whether they are set to pull automatically (DHCP) or if they are set statically. If theya re all set for DHCP, I would shut them all down and then boot them up one at a time. Each one will pull a individual IP address and should not conflict if you boot them one at a time.
