I have an eMachines computer system...I know it isn't the best to own, but it is all I could afford...it came with Windows XP installed. My problem is that the computer shuts down without warning all by itself and sometimes reboots and other times not. Last week I found several viruses and a whole lot of adware had gotten into my system. I had to erase my hard drive and start again from scratch and I also added Norton Internet Security 2004, Norton Anti-Virus 2004, Downloaded Ad-Aware 6.0, and downloaded all updates to all three. I have done complete scans using all three programs and found no problems...completely clean, but the computer still shuts down randomly...I have checked all connections and thought that maybe it was getting too warm, but it will do it soon after I turn the computer on as well...I am at a complete loss as to what to try now. eMachines tech department is difficult to reach on a weekend so any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated. And just so you know, I am a 44 year old housewife who is fumbling around in the dark when it comes to computers so if you could please keep the technical stuff at a first grade level I should be able to follow :D

Thanks so much in advance...

Hey anne and welcome to geekstogo!

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.
