I am having a real hassle trying to remove 'troj_istbar-1' from my xp(home) pc. I have tried Trend SYSCLEAN, and AD-Aware SE.

I've disabled SYSTEM RESTORE, and run the scans in both normal and safe mode.

Both these products say that they find the trojan and get rid of it.... but it just keeps coming back.

Any good help would be appreciated...

Hi there, and welcome! My name is Kat, and I'll be helping you to get your computer fixed up and on the run again! You may want to print these instructions or save them to a NotePad file on your desktop to make it easier for you to follow each step in order!

1. Please follow the instructions found Here to submit the file O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System CSRSS Patch] scrtkfg.exe for more investigation. When submitting, please include a link to your thread here, so they will know which log/area it came from! This would be greatly appreciated, as this is how we continue to learn and develop fixes!

2. Run at least 2 of these online virus scans:

Housecall<<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan<<<Accept default settings, save and post the log
RAV online scan<<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust Antivirus Web Scan<<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Bitdefender ScanOnline<<<Place a check by everything under 'Scan Options'.
Command on Demand

Also run an online trojan scan here: http://www.trojanscan.com/
Reboot when finished.

3. Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.
  • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {008DB894-99ED-445D-8547-0E7C9808898D} - C:\WINDOWS\mslagent\4b_1,0,1,2_mslagent.dll (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):
  • WinAntiVirus 2004
  • Macafea Personal Firewall
  • Security iGuard
  • Spyware Begone
Please note that ALL four of these programs are known as Rogue Spyware programs. Please see this link for more information:
http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware.htm

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):
  • C:\Program Files\WinAntiVirus 2004
  • C:\Program Files\Security iGuard
  • C:\spywarebegone
  • C:\progra~1\popupb~1
Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
  • c:\windows\system32\audcntr.exe
  • C:\WINDOWS\ncgea.exe
  • c:\windows\system32\vtxffbhq.exe

Go to Start>Search, and search for all instances of the following, and remove them:
  • MSNmassegez.exe
  • scrtkfg.exe
After that, Reboot.

4. Please download CleanUp! and run it to remove any leftover remnants of infection. Click the CleanUp button, and let it scan and select any files it needs to remove. Once it is done, exit the program.

5. After all of the above steps are complete, please scan for a new HJT log, and post it in this thread as a reply. Also, let me know of any problems you incurred during the cleaning process. If at ANY point you come across a problem that you think needs attention BEFORE continuing, please post a reply here and ask..and I'll help out!

Congratulations! :tazz: Your log is clean! ;)

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

If there is anything else we can help you with, please feel free to come back and visit again!
