Hi,
My mother is having trouble with the updating on her machine. Every time she updates from the MS updating site it installs everything except for one file and gets the following message: "This setup will only upgrade over an existing version of the Microsoft Virtual Machine."
I have researched this site and found one solution that looked promising. It said to delete the sub folder "REBOOTREQUIRED" in the reg which we did and then rebooted but the same message still pops up and the sub folder is recreated in the registry. Any ideas?

Microsoft Virtual Machine is no longer part of XP. Whichever update you're applying shouldn't be available from the Update site.
If you're not running Service Pack 2, please update to it and that should eradicate the need for this update.

Neil,
She IS running Service Pack 2 with XP Home edition. The update won't leave her alone. It keeps popping up and telling her to install the updates, so she does, and then tells her it can't finish because she doesn't have an original version of MS Virtual Machine. Goes in an endless loop. Won't go away. Why would she need the Java replacement?

Because MS Virtual Machine is years out of date, full of security holes and no longer supported by Microsoft. If this update comes down by Automatic Updates you can tell the system to ignore it.
