random freezes

hi im using a windows XP SP2
recently ive been having random freezes on my computer
the computer will make a ticking noise and then whatever application i have open will freeze, however i can still mini/maximize for a few minutes
after 3-5 minutes the entire computer freezes and i have to restart with the power button
this issue happens randomly ever couple of hours, this computer is quite old not quite sure when i bought it so im thinking it might just be time to get a new one but i wanted ur opinion and to see if i can fix this
