have been attempting to perform an Uninstall of a JRE (Java runtime environment) from my system but have not been able to complete the process.
With the help of the internet I can advise you on the steps I have taken to try and complete the uninstall.
The first thing I tried was to go to the Add Remove programs within the Control Panel and simply try to Remove the JRE update 1 and JRE update 2, however the attempt failed but resulted in a Fatal error message that contained no information, description or numbers. The link is to the steps I used.
<http://java.com/en/d...5000010800.xml>

I attempted the same steps while in Safe Mode but this fails because the Windows Installer is not running in Safe mode.
I updated my Windows Installer to 2.0 and attempted the above steps with a Clean boot up meaning no 3rd party applications running and no change.

I tried re-installing JRE 1.5.0_02 over top of the existing and although it indicated that it completed fine the uninstall steps from above still fail.

I uninstalled Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers and then attempted the uninstall and again no change.

I was able to confirm that the below information is incorrect on my system as there is no key matching {B7915B05-FC28-11D6-9D24-00010240CE95} preventing the manual uninstall instructions from working.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Uninstall
Under this "Uninstall" node, you will find many registry entry names enclosed in curly braces. e.g. {B7915B05-FC28-11D6-9D24-00010240CE95}

I also was able to complete the steps below except that I disabled the browser options because we want to uninstall the Java.Located uninstall instructions from a Read Me help file but they list the exact same Add/Remove program uninstall that has already failed in normal mode, Clean boot mode, and Safe mode.

At http://www.java.com/.../5000020200.xml found
1. Double-click the icon to open the Java Control Panel.
2. In the Java Control Panel, click the Advanced tab.
3. Under Settings, click on + icon against <Applet> tag support.
4. Make sure the box next to Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Mozilla is checked.
5. If it is not checked, click the checkbox to enable the JRE for your Web browser.
6. Click Apply.

I then found and tried the steps below and still to no avail:

There are two registry subkeys that you'll need to remove.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM
1.) Click Start then find Run.
2.) Enter the command:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall
Next I looked for and deleted the below files:
Now there's a few additional things that you will need to delete to have this finalized.
%systemroot%\system32\jview.exe
%systemroot%\system32\wjview.exe
%systemroot%\java
%systemroot%\inf\java.pnf

No change still getting Fatal error with no #s or information about the error when trying to remove.

what are you trying to accomplish - remove JRE entirely? remove update 2? remove updates 1 & 2? reinstall JRE?

what are the symptoms that pointed to a JRE problem?

how was the JRE originally installed - by you? or already on the pc?

question: is anything failing now that the JRE may be partially uninstalled?

another question:
the following was referenced in a JRE1.4 uninstall page
B7915B05-FC28-11D6-9D24-00010240CE95

was 1.4 installed previously?
was B7915B05-FC28-11D6-9D24-00010240CE95 found on your PC?

my computer seems slower and in the last couple of days I have had my computer freeze up 3 or 4 times, were the only way to get out of it was to hit the powere button, have ran virus scans, and microsofts anti spyware and both are showing that all is ok. I believe that 1.4 was installed before, as to when I couldnt tell you. I am not sure even when it was installed. I didnt see the B7915..... anywhere, not sure if I am looking in the right place.

you might want to submit a HJT log - there may be other files to delete.
here's a link to the HJT guide.
http://www.geekstogo...?showtopic=2852

while you are waiting for a HJT expert, there is an unorthodox test you can try.
install a new version of java into a new folder, then try to remove the new one.
