In the last month, IE7 started spiking its CPU usage up to 100%.

This happens in different ways and for different durations.

If I go to google.com, the CPU 100% spike will last about 3 seconds and then go away.

If I go to hotmail.com, the CPU 100% spike will last anywhere from 20 seconds to infinity. This is independent of me logging into hotmail.com -- just going to that site causes the spike.

If I minimize the IE7 windows in which hotmail.com is running, the CPU spike immediately goes away (very strange).

I have rolled my system back to a restore point considerably further back than when this started happening. No luck, same issue.

I have unistalled and reinstalled IE7. Again, no luck, same issue.

Entire time I have been running AVG Anti-Virus, Windows Defender, Comodo Firewall, and Ad-Aware 2007 and have seen nothing unusual when running these or in any of the logs.

Hijack This Logfile below, thanks.

If you suspect malware, please do not post a HJT log in this section of the forum. Only the Malware Experts are allowed to help you with malware. Please remove your HJT log and go to the Malware section of this forum and follow the instructions at the top. Especially the Click Here link. That will give you several steps that will help you clean up most of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the cleanup process you are still having difficulty, and you may not be, then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.

Please be patient as the "Malware Forum" is a very busy place and a two or three day wait is not unusual.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the Malware Section, please return to this thread. Please do not post a HiJackThis log in this thread unless asked to do so and then only as an attachment. To attach log, when requested, either change the .log extension to .txt, or put the log into a compressed (zipped) folder.

Please post back if your problem has been solved.

Ron,

Thank you for your reply.

I apologize and should have mentioned that I did everything in the Malware section -- mostly before I found geekstogo -- but some things in the Malware section I had not tried before, tried them, and then posted here.

I do not think it is malware and I should have also noted that.

I think the most likely scenarios are something wrong with the registry or a process or DLL that has run amok.

If you still believe I should do something else before posting here again, please let me know.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Hi Jim:

You need to follow the instructions explicitly for the Malware Forum. Not only what must be done without instructions, but what must be done with. No one outside of the Malware section will read your HJT log in this section of the forum unless a trained Malware Expert comes by who may find time to help you here. The Malware section gives you instructions where to post your HJT log to have it checked/read and instructions given for what needs to be removed.

Once a Malware Expert has said you are clean and you have the same problem, then post back here. Sorry for the long way around to resolve your problem.
