i think i have the infection called Trojan-Spy.html.smitfraud.c . it took over my screen and browser. i did the most of the steps here and it seems to have resolved the problem. i have all my tabs in the properties and i can search on yahoo, google, etc. i was just wondering if any of you could take a look at my hijackthis log file to see if there is anything else i need to do. thanks a lot!!!

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix will require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the Internet, or my instructions!

You have a very interesting log, very unusual. Does ATRIVOTECHNOLOGIES have any meaning to you? Let’s try a conventional method first of all and see how it goes. Now if you are ready, let’s get fixing!

You are running HijackThis from Temporary Internet Files; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else!

To start please download the following programme, we will run it later. Please save it to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

Iguard
Viewpoint
Websearch

Please notify me of any other programmes that you don’t recognise in that list in your next response

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this folder (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\

Please delete these files (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ejeeqy.exe
c:\wp.exe

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

HI! thanks for the help, i thought you guys had just passed me by, haha. well i did all the steps you told me to do, but got a few snags on the way. well not snags but just things i didnt need to delete because they weren't there. here is a list of the things i didnt need to delete:

Viewpoint (i did delete viewpoint manager and player though),

hopefully everything still works. i also found all the icons that got installed in my computer from the trojan, should i delete those too you think??

You are surfing the internet without any security patches being installed from Microsoft. Frankly, by doing that, you will always be getting infected. You must download and install the service packs as advised by Microsoft. So our first port of call is to their website.

MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

Go to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

If that bit has been carried out, next please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Spybot S&D
Killbox by Option^Explicit

Now please install and scan your system with Spybot S&D and check everything it finds coloured Red only before clicking Fix Selected Problems. If some malware is in the memory, Spybot will ask for your permission to allow it to scan on reboot; always allow it to do so.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file path listed below (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure!):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wyu.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered, press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you receive a message and your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Hello again

Your latest log shows that you have not updated Windows and Internet Explorer as per Microsoft's recommendations. Frankly, without those service packs you will continue to be infected and this is just a waste of time.

Please proceed with the service pack download and installations, and submit a fresh log when completed.

I can't continue until that has been achieved.
