Hi there

I've got all the usual anti-spyware programs loaded, up-to-date and regularly used but I cannot get rid of WindUpdates which is back every single day after being removed by a spyware prog (either MS Anti-Spyware or Spybot S&D).

It must be re-installing but I'm not techie enough to see how.

Here's my HiJackThis log. What do I do next? (Do let me know if there are any other nasties I haven't noticed won't you?) ;)

Many thanks!

Matt :tazz:

Hello Matt and welcome to Geeks to Go.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix will require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the Internet, or my instructions!

Your log looks like Fort Knox! Combine that with NTL’s security and I’m surprised anything ever got through. Now if you are ready, let’s get fixing!

To start please download the following programme, we will run it later. Please save it to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:
CCleaner

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O16 - DPF: {15AD4789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} -
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} –

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove this entry from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

Windupdates

Please notify me of any other programmes that you don’t recognise in that list in your next response

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and also an Uninstall Log:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.
and I will take another look.

Question: Is this PC a single identity set up?

Hi there

Thanks for your help :tazz:

Firstly, yes this is a single standalone home use PC.

Secondly, whilst restarting after Safe Mode, MS AntiSpyware warned that "Windows AdTools" wanted to install an ActiveX. It called this a high level threat but I clicked OK, so that hopefully if it's now lurking you'll be able to see it in my new log.

Here's my new HiJack This log:

Hello again Matt

This is not going to be easy. And I am (and others are) thinking a couple of stages ahead of this if it does not suceed.

I think you have so much protection in place that even trying to make changes with HijackThis is being thwarted.

What I'd like you to do is disable ALL of your spyware protectors from running during the fix so that changes can be affected. These programmes can just be disabled
Microsoft Antispyware, TeaTimer, Spyware Guard (have I missed any?), and then the fix.

So, lets get into safe mode. Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now disable all of the malware protection programmes.

Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check mark or tick against each of the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {15AD4789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} -
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} -

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Then reboot normally. Do not allow any active X control back on if any of your malware programmes asks you.

Please post a fresh HJT log and I'll have another look. My fingers are crossed.

Hi Phil

Alas, it seems it didn't work :-(

I tried disabling all anti-spyware stuff in the system tray before rebooting to Safe Mode.

In Safe mode there were no progs in System Tray and nothing appeared to be active, so nothing I could disable.

Here's the log:

Hello Matt

Humour me and try the same fix in normal mode with the malware protectors disabled.

So disable the programmes, then open HJT and tick the ones as before and click fix. Let's see if that works.

Hello again Matt

Let's try something else. We'll use the same items on the HJT log since that shouldn't change.

First print this. Physically unplug from internet. Literally pull the plug out of the modem or the NIC at the back of your PC.

Click START>RUN> type MSCONFIG>hit ENTER>GENERAL TAB ensure NORMAL STARTUP is selected>STARTUP TAB>tick DISABLE ALL>APPLY>OK>reboot into safe mode, run HJT and tick the three as before, click FIX CHECKED>reboot into normal mode and then go back to RUN>MSCONFIG and tick all the ones you had before.

Finally connect back to the internet and tell what happened.

Hello Matt

Can I see a HJT log when you have disabled all items in startup, logged back on in safe mode and rescanned with HJT please?

I just need physical confirmation of a thought.

Now I am going to bed ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Hello again Matt

If you look at the HJT log, and especially the entries that start with 04, you'll see that everything is running when you scanned. None of those should be there.

What I am trying to achieve is removal of malware from your "Fort Knox" PC.

The programmes you have running are stopping us from making changes.

Just before I went to bed last night, I checked one of your logs and counted 5 malware protection programmes (talk about belt and braces :tazz: ):

AntiSpyware
Spyware Blaster
Spybot Teatimer
Spyware Guard
Spyware Doctor

Can you open each of these programmes and either disable them or uninstall them. It is OK to have that many ON DEMAND malware scanners, but to have them running as soon as you turn your PC on is over the top, just like having more than one AV programme or more than one firewall. They interfere with each other and stop anything from happening, hence you can't clean your PC.

My guess, and that is what it is just a guess, is that you have had Windupdates and managed to delete the programme/folder, however the "hook" got left behind and keeps attempting reinfection. But because of your security, it can't download and reinstall itself. The consequence is that you go round in circles.

Whilst my guess may be wrong, the scenario fits.

So, with all of that in mind, could you please disable the above programmes and produce a HJT log without them showing up in the 04 area? That I think would give us a sporting chance.

Thanks.

Hi Phil

Sorry for long delay .... busy day.

Right, I think I've closed everything down at last.

Then I did the fix checked thing in Safe Mode too.

The bad stuff had gone, but when I re-enabled other things and re-booted the trouble began again: Winfows AdTools trying to install and dodgy 02 and O16 things were back.

Have cleaned it all up again and stuff is now disabled again.

Here's the resulting log:

Hello Matt

Quelle differance as they say in Birmingham! Almost there now.

Here's the last bit, I hope.

Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Tick the following, making sure you get both and not any others:

O16 - DPF: ppctlcab -
O16 - DPF: {54823A9D-6BAE-11D5-B519-0050BA2413EB} -

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

I'll take a peek at the fresh log after this fix, if you would be so kind as to provide it.

How accurate was my guess?
