Hi,

I recently got the above, and my desktop is now a blue screen saying "A fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM(01) + 00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c"

Having read through your forum, I have followed your general instructions, used Ad-Aware (I quarantined all malware and removed some program Security iGuard which popped up on my desktop) , anti-virus (AVG) and anti-Trojan (TrojanHunter) program but still no change.

When I ran HiJack This prior to TrojanHunter, I did see a wp.exe and wp.bmp but they have now disappeared from the log?? I'm really worried I've done something really wrong here!!

Please forgive me if I have missed out any details. I'm pretty much a newbie!

Thanking you in advance!

FG

Welcome to Geeks to Go!
Ok, this is a new infection and I'm working on a fix for it. Would you mind doing a couple of things for me? I'll be happy to help you! There is just some information I need that I don't have access to since I don't have the infection on my system and I don't particularly want to infect myself to find out the answers!

I have actually already completed the fix, so I don't need you to do anything for me now :tazz: Ready to fix your system?

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT* Be sure you know how to VIEW HIDDEN FILES

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field) MAKE SURE TO ENTER ALL FILE PATHS!:

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you recieve an error message "PendingRenameOperation...." and your computer doesn't restart, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files <-WILL be there!
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Reboot into normal mode.

*Download and install Registrar Lite version 2.00
*Double click the purple Registrar Lite icon on your desktop.
*Copy the line below and paste it into the "Address" field (located at the top) of the program:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

*Click the "Go" button.
*It will take you into the "Policies" folder.
*Locate the "System" folder (in the right panel)
*If found, right-click on the System folder and go to Delete
*Be very careful that you only delete the System folder that is inside the Policies folder.

Reboot your computer again.

1.) Download the Hoster from HERE Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Download: http://www.mvps.org/.../DelDomains.inf
To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log.

Hi,

Thank you for your help. The new HiJack This log is below.

Disturbingly, when I ran the ActiveScan, it identified more issues. The computer seems to be in working order now (blue desktop is gone and have my screen properties functions back!! :tazz: ) so I guess these problems aren't critical but would you mind just casting your eyes over the scan results (below) for me?

Thanks ever so much! Sorry to be a nuisance!

Yep, Panda usually finds "leftovers" that we can't see. That's why I had you run the virus scan :tazz:

Please read these instructions carefully

*Double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field):

C:\WINDOWS\inf\farmmext.inf
C:\WINDOWS\msxmidi.exe
C:\WINDOWS\inf\fastvideoplayer.inf
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\YPSR\Quarantine\ppq60.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wldr.dll

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts.

Post a new HiJackThis log. There are still a couple of items to get rid of in your log.

Thank you so much - I had this exact same problem, and despite not being able to find the system32/logs folder in Safe Mode, this cleared up the issue.

Thanks a million, Bananafanafo!

Hi,

Sorry late reply, but AVG picked up a number of Trojans in between which I subsequently moved into the vault and deleted. I think things are relatively OK now!(?) :tazz:

Here is the latest HiJack This log:

It's looking better - and you are NOT being a nuisance! You don't have anything to apologize for, that's what I'm here for - to help :tazz:

Ok, I need you to post a new HiJackThis log. After posting the next log, please do not shut down, log off, or restart your computer. One of the files is changing names on us!

Hi,

Here is the latest HiJack This Log.

I'm not sure if this is a part of all this but I get problems when I load up windows now. Windows starts but sometimes I just get a screen with no icons, no taskbar, just the mouse pointer!

When I do get Windows to start up normally, all the icons and taskbar disappear momentarily then come back.

Thanks again for your help.

Run HiJackThis and put a check next to the following item, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iyelsoh] c:\windows\system32\btulpw.exe

Close HiJackThis.

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field):

c:\windows\system32\btulpw.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the YES button.

Post a new HiJackThis log.
