Can't use anti-virus program or Safe Mode; canít find virus

Hijack log follows description.

This is the first time I have come to a forum for this kind of help. I think I have a virus or trojan on my Dell Workstation 360 Pentium 4 Windows XP computer. I am very good at regularly running scans, keeping Windows updated, and so on. However, over the course of the last few days these are the symptoms I have found and the steps I have taken:

1. A few days ago, my anti-virus program (CA Antivirus) and Firewall (Norton Personal 2006) do not load into the system tray anymore. I tried repairing them and then uninstalling/reinstalling. No go.
2. Around the same time, the computer starting making occasional clicking sounds it had never made before. These have since stopped.
3. I was able to load a different firewall: Comodo.
4. I canít load any new anti-virus protection. I have tried ZoneAlarm, AVG, and one or two others that I canít now remember. Most often I get a message saying that the .exe file for the program canít be found. Or I wonít be able to update. For example, though I could load AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, I got the following message: ďError: failed to connect to serverupdateasfreeinfo.grisoft.com
5. Fix-It Utilities 7 Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware, already on my computer and which I keep updated, found nothing.
6. SUPERAntiSpyware, which I keep it updated and which used to work fine, now runs for a couple of minutes and then shuts down the computer with the BSOD.
7. I did install Trojan Remover and AVG Anti-Rootkit, which found nothing.
8. I canít do a Windows XP update (normally updated because done automatically), either automatically (the download fails) or manually (I get a ďfile corruptedĒ message when I try to open the files.)
9. I canít get into Safe Mode, through either F8 or msconfig. Again, I get a BSOD.
10. I have uninstalled the one or two items I recently installed. No change.
11. I tried using System Restore, which failed. Further, the restore points went no further back than last month
12. I turned off System Restore.
13. I ran CCleaner, which did not change performance at all.
14. I tried the Recovery Console, using recommendations from this web site: http://icrontic.com/...pair_windows_xp. These included del boot.ini, BOOTCFG /Rebuild, CHKDSK /R /F, and FIXBOOT.

I am fresh out of ideas. I have no real-time monitoring anti-virus program on my computer; Iím a little afraid that my computer is simply not going to boot up some time soon, and that my computer has been hijacked.

Following is the hijackthis log. (I have run ComboFix, Disk Cleanup, ATF Cleaner, and CCleaner, and created a single recent System Restore point.) Any help greatly appreciated.

Using FixPolicies.exe I have been able to boot into Safe Mode. Howeever, I still can't update AVG Anti-Spyware definitions. Any help?

Hi, Again:
I've made a little more progress. Now I can auto-update Comodo and AVG in Safe Mode, but still not in regular mode. Any help?
