Browsing seems OK, occasional pop-up, but she could use a simple blocker like in Yahoo's toolbar or AdSubtract. So, can I do more AdAware and SpySweeper scans, along with anti-virus scans, then update to SP2? Do you think she needs Norton or McAfee virus protection, because I'm not sure how AOL's virus protection works (despite all the commercials), especially when one uses IE or Netscape vs AOL's browser.

AdAware still picking up Critical Objects (~50), but performance is not apparently affected.

So, you think she's ready for SP2?

Sicne your still seeing some spyware, run these scans, and then report back with another log and a progress update on how your system is running. You probably have all of these programs on your computer, so just run them =)

Please download Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware.

Follow all the instructions on this website to run a scan with both of these softwares.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

Please download Ewido

Install it and then double click on the new icon for the program. You can't miss it, it's a big yellow E. It will ask you to upgrade the database. Follow the instructions.
Once it is ready click on the Scanner button, Select C drive if you have more than one and then start.

This scan may take a while, but please allow it to complete the entire scan.

At then end of the scan, it may ask if you would like to delete anything found in archive or zipped files, OK that request, then click on save report. SAVE to the default location, it will then generate a text file. Copy that to post in this thread.

Post a normal HJT log.

Post back with those logs and we can continue from there.

Kaspersky turned up 3 viruses. I didn't see a button for a report save, then cleaned them before writing them down. They may have been the same ones on my Norton-protected laptop...

Browsing shows no issues, but AdAware scan turns up 2 tracking cookies, no big deal. SpyBot shows 1 IE plugin file (C:\WINDOWS\du.lat) and 24 registry keys from MyWay.MyBar. SpySweep noted 2 entries, DesktopTraffic and ABetterInternet. All in all, the hijacking of the browser and wallpaper is over and done with. Think it's ready for SP2? I'm itching to get her computer all updated, maybe Norton or McAfee installed, get it back to her.

You should be safe to update. Just keep runing scans and think about using some of these tools.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

• Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  
• AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  
• SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  
• SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  
• IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  
• CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  
• Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  
• Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  
• Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

You were a big help. SP2 installed fine, doing one last scan with the trial programs before taking them off. I'll put SpywareBlaster and Guard on her system (if they're free). I used the Yahoo toolbar with pop-up blocker and anti-spy. I'll add Computer Associates anti-virus, since it's free for 12 months, more than all the others. That should hold her for a while.

All seems to be well. So when this topic is closed, does it get deleted from the forum? I'll save these pages anyway, because there's a wealth of info in here worth keeping as reference in case family and friends come across this level of infection.
