Please download Windows XP Service Pack 1a here.

Once downloaded, please install the update.

Dembraves,

I apologize for the delay in my response, I have been lazy this weekend.

I have a reply ready for you, but I am having another trusted helper look at it, just to be safe.

I should have it posted for you tomorrow.

Again sorry for the delay.

Dembraves,

We have a lot to do here, and first lets start out by running a few more programs to try and get your system as clean as it can get with programs =)

Download this program:

Ewido

Install it and then double click on the new icon for the program. You can't miss it, it's a big yellow E. It will ask you to upgrade the database. Follow the instructions.
Once it is ready click on the Scanner button, Select C drive if you have more than one and then start.

This scan may take a while, but please allow it to complete the entire scan.

At then end of the scan, it may ask if you would like to delete anything found in archive or zipped files, OK that request, then click on save report. SAVE to the default location, it will then generate a text file. Copy that to post in this thread.

Carry out another HJT scan and post the log back here, so we can sort out the rest of the problems.

J,
Thanks for staying up late.
Trying the ewido scan again (4th time), but gonna tell you the "haps" so far. Ewido "encounters a problem and needs to close" about 60% into the C: drive scan. It asks me about cleaning archive C:\WINDOWS\system32\javex80.vxd because it can't clean a file inside the archive. I chose "delete all" then the windows problem comes up and the program closes when I select either send or don't send option. The scan won't continue if I leave the option box alone. The message in the bottom of the window when I get the dialog box for archive deletion is
Clean C:\WINDOWS\system32\javex80.vxd/C:/WINDOWS/System32/nvms.dll

The next time it came up, I chose ignore, still came to a stop with this in the bottom of the window when the windows problem box comes up.
Clean C:\WINDOWS\system32\javexulm.vxd

Then I selected just the "delete" option, got another similar message, selected delete, then the error occured with this in the ewido window
Clean C:\WINDOWS\system32\mac80ex.idf/C:/WINDOWS/System32/msbe.dll

Rerunning Ad-Aware (600+ entriesfound) and Spybot (currently 10 entries and counting). Maybe I shouldn't leave it on while connected to an active network? Duh!

Here's the ewido report w/o the archives box checked...

Other suggestions? Gonna try Webroot's Spy Sweeper just for grins. PC World rated it well. Why not?

J,
Thanks for taking time out of your weekend.
This is after a SpySweeper scan and reboot. SpySweeper still detects nefarious activity that it could not delete because the process was in memory.
Thanks,
D

Dembraves,

Please run Notepad and copy the following text into a new file:

@ECHO OFF
cd %windir%
Nail.exe /FULLREMOVE
sc config SvcProc start= disabled
sc stop SvcProc
sc delete SvcProc
attrib -s -r -h nail.exe
attrib -s -r -h svcproc.exe
del nail.exe
del svcproc.exe
cd %windir%\system32
attrib -s -r -h DrPMon.dll
del DrPMon.dll
exit

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on remove.bat. A window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido security suite, and perform a full scan. Remove anything found, and please save the logfile from the scan, because I will ask you to post it here for me later.

Then please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

J,
Appreciate the Sun evening post.

Here's the HJT log (Prevx still warning about C:\WINDOWS\nail.exe...still there)
When I click fix for checked items, what should happen after the warning message? For me, the box goes blank and the scan button is active again with no other message(s).

Dembraves,

1) Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

2) Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.

3) Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.

4) Select "Delete on Reboot".

5) Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

6) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

7) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again..

Let the system reboot.

Then post a new HiJackThis log for me.

J,
Hope I did it right. At first I blindly selected YES, then NO, but nothing happened and the box with the Nail.exe entry went blank. The second prompt was not a Pending Operations prompt as I assumed w/o looking. It asked me if I wanted to reboot now. So, I selected YES and YES and the system rebooted, which is more in line with your instructions to let the system reboot versus commanding it myself. On reboot I got a message saying the Windows could not find C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe and the Prevx monitoring software did not come up with a warning about Nail.exe.

Thanks,
D

Dembraves,

We are trying to get rid of a fairly new infection, so we will keep trying new things until we get it fixed.

click START ->> RUN then type REGEDIT and delete these entries:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors\ZepMon]
"Driver"=DrPMon.dll
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\Print\Monitors\ZepMon]
"Driver"=DrPMon.dll

Open HiJackThis and check these entries:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe

Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.

Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.

Select "Delete on Reboot".

Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
QUOTE
C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe
Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

Reboot, and post a new log.

J,

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\Print\Monitors\ZepMon]
"Driver"=DrPMon.dll

was not there, but

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Control\Print\Monitors\ZepMon]
"Driver"=DrPMon.dll

was present, so I deleted it.

For some reason, the paste from clipboard gave me nothing in the window. I made a text file with the 2 entries, copied them, tried the "paste from clipboard", but the window was blank. A simple control-C only put the top file in the list in place. Guess my clipboard skills are lacking. Does KillBox work on multiple files at a time? I got this feeling that it doesn't, at least not for me.

So going with just the MediaAcc entry in KillBox (forgot to try Nail.exe again)netted this response, "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been removed by External Process!" I click OK and nothing happens. I reboot manually (no warning message about Nail.exe not found) and post this HJT log...
Thanks for the early-riser input.
