I'm a newbie on this so please set me straight if there's anything amiss!

Initial problem was that instances of IE (I'm on vers. 6.0 on XP home edition) opened themselves automatically. URL started with something like http:\\filost\randomsites... though I can't remember exactly. Google search for "filost" led me to Geeks to Go.

I have followed the advice given before posting this log (Ad aware SE, then CWShredder, then Spybot with DSO Exploit fix, Panda Activescan, TDS-3). Went to Micorsoft update site, but it recommends I install Service Pack 2 straight off so haven't done this as you say it could cause conflicts. Have had Norton Antivirus as long as I've had this laptop, and installed Norton Personal Firewall after this problem emerged (bolting stable door after horse had bolted...).

Problem has changed after doing the above. I now get occasional instances of new IE flashing up on task bar with http:\\filost... but then it disappears without window ever appearing. Am keen to get problem sorted and PC cleaned so that I can install service pack 2 and hopefully remain safe....

Please print out these instructions to make it easier to follow and so that you have them should you need to reboot your PC.

Carry out a free online virus scan from the link below and allow it to fix anything it may find.

Panda Active Scan

Next please download the following programs Install and update it. Then run and allow to fix anything that it may find.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3

Rescan your PC with HJT.

Set your system to show hidden files. Click link below if you do not know how to do this.

Show hidden files

Using Windows explorer find the following files/folders and delete them.

c:\ex.cab
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll

Download and Install the following program to clean up temp files etc.

Cleanup

Reverse the show hidden files proceedure to rehide them

Reboot your PC normally

Rescan with HJT and post the new log back in this thread

Sorry about the delay in doing this - busy week and weekend!

I did as recommended. Checked the offending boxes (including the optional ones) having run Panda and Spybot.

Restarted in safe mode. Deleted explorer.cab and vbsys2.dll. The other 2 files weren't present. Had to restart PC at this point, as I hadn't previously downloaded cleanup... so restarted normally, downloaded the software, restarted back into Safe Mode and ran the programme. Restarted normally again and started internet explorer to come to this site, and I haven't had the problem that I was having which is good! Here's the HJT log:

Hi gutbags,

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one.

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. :tazz:

You can now go ahead with updating to SP2

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
