Hi, I hope someone can help ...

When I try starting my computer, the error message that is displayed is:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I have no idea how to do this, I have the Windows Cd and can boot up from there but have no idea where to go now... I know how to reformat but I would like to not lose my documents and such on my computer.

Any help would be appreciated,

thanks

Hello katie0111 and welcome to Geeks To Go!

That's great that you have your Windows CD, it's going to help out a lot. You may not have to reinstall your system or lose any of your files. It sounds like it's just an issue that is keeping windows from booting up properly. Please see the following Microsoft KB article for some detailed instructions on how to resolve this issue:
"Invalid Boot.ini" or "Windows could not start" error messages when you start your computer

If you need help at any point, please let us know.

Regards,

Ax
