I've worked through the 'do this first' section. Tried Ad-Aware SE, SpySubtract, CWShredder, AVG, TDS-3, HijackThis. Can't get rid of Nail.exe and dada.exe... i don't know if these are the problem or not. Ad-Aware says this:

Windows Object Recognized!
Type : RegData
Data : explorer.exe c:\windows\nail.exe
Category : Vulnerability
Comment : Shell Possibly Compromised
Rootkey : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Object : software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon
Value : Shell
Data : explorer.exe c:\windows\nail.exe

But it can't remove it... it's back everytime i scan.

Here is my HJT log. I hope someone can help. Thanks.

Get a copy of winsockxpfix.exe before you do anything. This is just a safety
item in case you can't get on the internet afterwards. You just run it and
things should work OK after it reboots your system.

http://www.iup.edu/h...net/winfix.shtm

Also download and install ccleaner.exe from http://www.ccleaner.com. Don't let
it clean anything yet.

Start then right click on My Computer and press Manage. In the new window
Service and Applications then Services. In the right pane scroll down and find
the System Startup Service. Double click on it and and then set the Start Type
to Disabled. Then OK.

Now shutdown and reboot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.

Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check then Fix
Checked the following:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [zqdqthd] c:\windows\system32\hqcsox.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinOrganizer] C:\Program Files\WinOrganizer\WinOrganizer.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ttsp] C:\Documents and Settings\My Computer\Application Data\dada.exe
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Wait 60 seconds and repeat the scan. Did any of the above come back? IF so
leave HijackThis up and right click on the clock and select Task Manager. Then
Processes. Find Explorer.exe, right click on it and select End Process. The
desktop will disappear but HijackThis should still be there. IF you don't see
it switch to Applications in Task Manager and highlight it there then press
Switch To or just double click on it. Check and Fix Checked the above again.
Restart Explorer by Task Manager, File, New Task(Run), explorer.exe, OK.

Now run ccleaner.exe. On the first page, uncheck everything but the two lines
that have the word Temporary in them then Run Cleaner.

Reboot into normal mode and run another HijackThis log and post. Let's
see how we did.

Thanks so much for taking this on Ron.
Followed your instructions.
I think we moved forward.
I noticed when changing system startup type to disabled that
Path to executable: is C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
i guess this is normal?

Just a couple questions yet...

Should I leave my system startup type on disable? what does this change?

Is there any real way of staying 100% spyware free?

Thanks again,
seve.

Reenable your System Restore. It is your friend and not the enemy like the antivirus companies maintain. If something odd happens then you just use it to go back to an early time and the problem is solved. Always make a new manual system restore point before downloading anything.

Check everything in HijackThis and press Add to Ignore list. Repeat.

Now everything that shows up will be new. Makes it easier to recognize. Use it regularly to see if something new has loaded. If you see something and aren't sure then google for the .exe or .dll file and read a couple of sites (some of them say everything is spyware buy out product so you can ignore them) and see if people like it or not. If there are no hits when you google for it. Checkyour spelling and then Check/Fix Checked it.

Only way to stay 100% clean is not to use the internet but if you keeps your patches up to date and make sure the firewall is running you will do a lot better.

I recommend Microsoft's new AntiSpy Beta. It's free and seems to be pretty good and getting better every day. http://www.microsoft.com

The advice has also seemed to work for me. However, I did not have system startup (svcproc.exe) in the manager program. Do I need to have this. I think I may have gotten rid of it somehow taking another forum's advice. This nail.exe, thnall1ac.exe is wreaking havoc on my life!!!!

And now, my firewall is detecting thnall1ac.exe again!!! I thought this was gone following your advice, and hijack this no longer shows nail.exe, nor is it in the windows directory.

Any suggestions on either the startup issue or thnall1ac?

You don't need it. It is a bad thing. That's why we disable it.

I would have to see your log to tell you what is going on.

HI Sean,

If you don't mind I'll be taking over from Ron.

Make sure to allow the changes in WinPatrol or any other program prompts you.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gqqiln] f:\windows\system32\dcebox.exe

Then reboot. Download and install Ewido from http://www.ewido.net/en/
and use it to do a full system scan.

Keep us posted please,

Regards,

Pieter

Hi Pieter,

I'm sorry I haven't replied sooner, I've been away from my computer. Anyway, before getting your reply I ran a ewido scan and it detected thnall and thnall1ac. Since that time, I haven't had any problems. However, I ran a hijack this scan and removed the first item. I am posting my hijack this log, in case this helps give insight into what ewido did or how the problem stopped happening.
