My computer gets just past the windows logo screen, and where it would normally show the desktop, it just shows a blank, black screen with the mouse cursor (i can still move the cursor). Even if I try safe mode I have the same problem. Any ideas?

Thanks!

hi - no, it doesn't - the only way I can shut the computer down is to hold the power button for 5 seconds.

While starting your computer tap the F8 key once every second during the memory count up, or during the system splash screen where you see the system maker's name (HP, COMPAQ, DELL....etc.)

This will result in a text based menu. Use the cursor/arrow keys to navigate to SAFE MODE and hit enter.

Does the problem occur in safe mode?
