I recently got a system alert message on my laptop stating that I had Worm.Win32.NetSky and a Windows Security Alert pop-up that says "Windows has detected an internet attack attempt..." My desktop background was replaced by a red background with a biohazard symbol. There have been three icons placed on my desktop: "Privacy Protector", "Error Cleaner" and "Spyware and Malware Protection" I deleted the icons and emptied the recycle bin several times and the icons kept resurfacing. Lastly, the IE browser directed itself to different spyware removal sites.
I'm by no means "techno saavy", but I saw about 15 other threads with people having the same problem. I checked each one out, and noticed a pattern in the HijackThis logs. Here's how you remove the worm and get your PC back. You may want to print this out because there will be times when you will be required to be offline.
1. First of all, if you don't already have them, download HijackTHis and SmitFraud.
Next go to your computer's "Start Menu".
Open the "Control Panel".
Open "System".
Select "Turn OFF System Restore". (This prevents Windows from making backup files of the worm after it's been removed.)
RESTART the computer
2. As the computer is rebooting, tap the F8 button to open the com menu.
Start the computer in "Safe Mode".
3. Double click the HijackThis.exe file.
Run a Scan and Save the Scan Log.
DO NOT CHECK OFF ANY OF THE BOXES OR FIX ANYTHING YET!
Once the scan is complete, take a look at the log which should resemble the following.
Take note of the bolded items.

4. Check the boxes next to the bolded items.
Fix selected items.
HijackThis will create a backup folder of all the extracted items on the desktop.
Delete the backup folder.
5. Open SmitFraud
At the prompt, press 1 and ENTER to search.
Save the rapport log. (You can view the log by going to the C drive's root)
SmitFraud will prompt again. Press 2 to clean the registry.
Restart Computer in Normal Mode.
6. Run HijackTHis scan again
Take another look at the log.
Close HijackThis.
7. Run SmitFraud scan again.
My laptop has been running smoothly for the last 24 hours. No hiccups. By the way, to restore your desktop to it's former glory:
Right click the desktop.
Select Display.
Choose the background you were using from the list.
