Virus that creates lines on your monitor?

My laptop has begun to develop 1-2 pixel lines on the screen. At first one, then two, then three. Just now a fourth one appears. This has happened over a span of 4-5 months. However, I'm getting sick of it. Is it possible that a virus would be able to create these lines? I'm much more computer savvy than my dad but he claims a friend of his had over 35 lines and resolved his problem by reformatting.

Again, is it possible for a virus to do this? The lines appear as soon as the computer boots.
