I'm looking for hard drive backup software that will backup my files as well as my operating system. I will have to replace the internal HD soon because of its size and wanted to know if there is anything to transfer one HD to another internal with Windows XP home or should I just use an external USB drive.

Many solutions available, probably the best known example is Norton Ghost. With this program or other alternatives, you can install both drives and clone the old one to the new one, an easy and quickest solution to upgrading from a smaller drive to a bigger drive. You can also use it for backup purposes, also to a USB drive.
