Vista / Messenger Freeze

Hi

Sorry if I have placed this query in the wrong section but it is my first time.

When I attempt to sign-in to Messenger 8, the login screen freezes. The two little men spin happily and would continue to do so for hours unless I terminate. I have reinstalled Messenger 8 many times and accessed a so-called fix from Acer but this didn't work either. My computer has just come back from the shop - all previous software was reloaded. Prior to this, Messenger worked OK. Also prior to this, I was having sign-in problems but another tech was able to correct this by entering some code into the black window (DOS I think).

Any suggestions ?
