Yet when I click on Metallica's profile in the list, it says Last seen: 17 minutes ago. Not anything major, just wanted to let you know

I'm pretty sure 'Last Seen' tells you when the person is last seen, I don't think it ever changes to 'Offline' or anything like that.

x users active in the past 15 minutes corresponds to the list at the bottom of the main forum page.

Yes, that's what I saw in their profile after I clicked it in that list.

It completely automated. There's a time stamp, and 15 minutes after the users last activity they no longer are displayed in the active list. Perhaps you waited a minute or two to click on the username? Either way, it's nothing you (or I) should lose any sleep over.
