Hi andrewuk. So, I went to the website for the Norton removal tool, but I cannot remember what version of Norton I had. And since, I Removed it from the Control Panel, I cannot find a trace of it to check what version it was. What do you think I should do?

And for the remaining entries in the log, should I do the same HijackThis procedure as before?

Thanks.

-- Security Center -------------------------------------------------------------

AUOptions is scheduled to auto-install.
Windows Internal Firewall is enabled.

AntiVirusDisableNotify is set.
FirewallDisableNotify is set.

FW: Norton Internet Security v2004 (Symantec Corporation)

looks like the 2004 version

also, make sure your AVG is updated - it seems to be out of date!

hi andrewuk. So, I was able to remove all components of Norton. Regarding AVG, it updates every time I turn on my comp (or return from Standby). I opened the AVG Control Center, and it looks like to me that everything is up to date. What is the next step? Thank you, ALCee410.

hi again. I had a question. Jave Console is giving me a message that i should download an update. Should I do this now?

Also, when I restart the computer, I get a black screen asking me whether I want to start Windows or some Recovery Console (or something like that...i may not have remembered correctly, as I did not take note of it). But, basically, it gives two options, and the default highlighted option is to start Windows, and I have to hit Enter for it to continue starting Windows. Is this normal?

yes, it is ok to do so.

yes, it is normal. your machine was quite infected at the start so i installed it in case the worst came to the worst. given the direction malware is going i suspect the Windows Recovery Console will soon be installed as standard. however, you can remove it if you so chose by following the instructions http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654 and scrolling down to the part titled How to delete the Recovery Console

Regarding AVG, it updates every time I turn on my comp (or return from Standby). I opened the AVG Control Center, and it looks like to me that everything is up to date.

as long as it is uptodate that is ok - make sure, for example, that it was not a trial copy that has expired. if so, we can install another antivirus program.

and is your machine running ok?

hi Andrewuk. Yes, I think my machine is running ok. I think after we are all done, I will get this anti-virus called Sophos Antivirus. It is provided to students and employees of the University where I work. Have you heard of it? Do you recommend it? I think the benefit to me, is that it will always be up-to-date for free, without a subscription.

One note: When I resume Windows from Standby Mode, I get a black screen with a progress bar that says, "Resuming Windows". This progress bar is normal, but the time it takes now for it to complete Resuming is significantly longer. But again, this may be due to the "trauma" that my comp has experienced. Do you agree?

Is there anything else we should do? What Spywares, Anti-Virus programs do you recommend? Is it worthwhile to purchase a subscription to an Anti-Virus, and if so which one(s)?

Thanks for all your help. ALCee410

sophos is a well known company in the antivirus market. they mainly focus on business antivirus solutions and i suspect antivirus solution will be as good as other products out there. so it should be just fine. the key is only to have one antivirus program on your machine.

lets do one more scan of your machine and i will see if there is anything obvious taking a while to load up.

in my final post i will leave you with a list of programs to use. lets do that scan first, if i cant see anything and the malware is gone then we can wrap up and i can point you in the direction of other parts of this forum which can help you out.

click on Start, click on Run
copy and paste the following in bold in the open window and then click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
This will open up DSS configuration
click on Check All
click Scan
DSS will now run again when finished
Please post back both logs that open in notepad
Main txt and extra txt

from a malware point of view, your logs are clean :)

so lets wrap this up. once you have done the steps below post your issue concerning resuming Windows from standby in the Windows XP™, 2000, 2003, NT part of this forum which is in Operating Systems. say that your machine has been cleared of malware.

in this post we will clear away the fix tools, reset your restore points (there will be infections in there) and i will leave you with some ideas on how to enhance the protection of your machine against future infection.

====STEP 1====
clearing away the fix tools and resetting your restore points
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

    • Posted Image

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.
you can delete the other fix tools used

If you have trouble with this, let me know and we will clear away the fix tools and reset your restore points another way

====AND FINALLY====
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
