Hi,

I'm also new to the forums and would love some feedback on my problem. Recently, I went to click on a link thinking it would show the end of a movie (Cloverfield). Instead, a virus/trojan/worm installed itself and now, whenever I try to turn on my computer, the screen would blink once. And then I would get the message containing "NT Authority Shutdown code -1073741819 service.exe (sic)" and the computer would turn off in 60 seconds. I've tried scanning with McAfee (not updated), Spybot Search and Destroy, as well as AdAware (not updated). Perhaps those programs couldn't find the problem since I couldn't update them now that my connection is compromised.

I read somewhere else that C: Windows\service.exe is bad, but I don't think I have that. I also used HijackThis to remove an Embassy Suite Trust line, but haven't tried restarting my computer yet to see if that fixed the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Thank you so much for responding. I followed your directions and ran the program on SAFE MODE since on regular mode, the computer shuts down in 60 seconds. Everything went well and I restarted my computer. Unfortunately, the screen blinked again so I was afraid it the virus was still there. I quickly try to run the FixIEDef.exe program again but the screen is stuck and now an error says:

Error 800706BE in IEnumWbemClassObject::Next: The remote procedure call failed.
OK

I will reboot in SAFE MODE and post a new hijackthis log.

I noticed aawservice.exe is running in the background. Could that have interfered with the cleaning?

Yes, could you please disable it.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
• Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Hey Tigger,

Thanks again for the advice. I turned on my computer and loaded on SAFE MODE. Then I disabled System Restore. Next, I went to Task Manager and ended process for aawservice.exe. Ran SmitfraudFix.exe and cleaned by option 2, and entering Y. A Rapport log was created and popped up after SmitfraudFix.exe finished scanning and cleaning. It asked again if I wanted to clean by selecting option 2 and also that the computer might need to reboot. I pressed clean by option 2 again and the same thing occurred. Therefore, I decided to reboot in Normal Mode.

Screen flickered again after loading, and then all my desktop icons disappeared. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del was useless, and the same NT Authority Shutdown Code -1073741819 message appeared. Once the countdown finished, I was left with a blue screen with just my mouse cursor and no icons. The shutdown didn't occur however, and then I manually turned the power off. I'm back on SAFE MODE.

Okay, when the computer loads up in normal mode, immediately go Start > Run and type in shutdown -a

This will stop the shutdown from occurring.

Then download this and run it. It should remove the virus causing the shutdown.

Afterwards restart.

Post a new HijackThis log please and let me know if The Stinger fixed the shutdown problem.

Ok, loading up Windows normally and then immediately doing shutdown -a caused the shutdown message to not appear; however, all my icons on desktop disappeared, leaving with just my mouse cursor. Pressing Ctrl+ALT+DEL was useless and nothing came up. I manually powered down and restarted on Safe Mode to install Stinger. It is scanning right now.

I decided I could go back to my history folder to find out perhaps where I got the virus from. It seems like all the websites I've been to seem ok except for one: Removed Underneath that history i have: "install_player_3912996". The entire link is: "Remove Link" DON'T CLICK THAT LINK, unless you're a Geeks to Go Malware Staff who can help me out. I'm almost positive that was what gave me the virus, since I wanted to watch the ending of the movie Cloverfield and it had asked to install a player which I clicked Yes.

If that is any help at all in identifying the virus, please let me know. Perhaps someone can use a scanner to find out what that link does.

Ok, Stinger didn't work. I restarted computer on Normal and got the same message about shutting down in 60 secs...code -1073741819.

I ran Stinger in Safe Mode, because computer won't stay on long enough in Normal mode for Stinger to work. Pressing Shutdown -a didn't matter.

I've removed the link in your post earlier. I sent it along to folks who will get the malware sent out to Anti-Virus companies for detection and to try and get the site shut down.

We've made a little progress, but it's time to break out the big tool.

Download ComboFix from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Hey...

Ok, sorry for kind of ending this right here, but I decided to freshly reinstall XP. What I should have done however was reinstall XP on the same drive (C:); instead, it got installed onto a new drive (D:). So now I got 2 OS's on 2 hard drives, which is just a big waste of space in my opinion. The computer loads up fine now when I select the new XP to load. No more shutdowns, crashes, etc. At this point, I've reinstalled McAfee VirusScan as well as AdAware/Spybot/HijackThis, etc on to the new D: drive. I've updated these programs and am in the process of scanning my entire system with these updated files. Hopefully, they'll catch that [bleep] of a virus/worm on my C:

Oh well, I guess I'll have to figure out a way to get rid of the original XP in order to conserve space. I may just take the whole thing to my school's IT dept and have them reset everything back to factory settings.

Rejoiced too soon.

Looks my original drive C: is now unusable. It loaded up nicely for a while, no NT Shutdown message, but then the system just crashed. I could move the mouse but couldn't click on anything. @ error messages then popped up:
