Hi All -

I was here a month or two ago for some help and unfortunately I'm coming back :)

This morning when I booted up the computer it ran a check disk before bringing up windows. When it finished this and windows finally came up my anti-virus (norton) wasn't working. It was saying I needed to activate even though I should have about 5 months left on my subscription. When I hit the key to activate it tells me it runs into an issue and needs me to uninstall and reinstall. I was about ready to bite the bullet and just switch to kaspersky, but it told me I didn't have the proper access to uninstall Norton.

I've also been running into various problems with spyware. I occasionally run Spybot SD, Adaware and Super anti-spyware. Before I had my previous issue I hardly had any issues. Since then I've had numerous issues popping up on my scans. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what ended up being the problem last time.

I've attached a HJT file and a Super antispyware log.

HJT:

Hello

Download rootchk by Ejvindh to your desktop.
  • Temporarily Disable Real Time Monitoring Programs you have running that are listed here, such as TeaTimer, Adwatch, and HIPs programs like Prevx, while we complete the fixes (see **Note below).
  • Disconnect from the internet
  • Double click rootchk.exe to run the program
  • After a short time a logfile will open.
  • Copy the contents of the log into your next reply.
  • Re-enable active protection on any program you have disabled while completing the scan

**Note:If you are using the ZoneAlarm Pro firewall or any other security program that protects your registry (Teatimer, Adwatch, Prevx), rootchk may produce false positives. That is why it is important for you to disable these programs before running a rootchk scan. To prevent ZoneAlarm Pro conflicts, first enable the Windows Firewall (click start | Control Panel | Windows Firewall and select the checkbox to turn it on). Then disable ZoneAlarm Pro before running the rootchk. Also, disable any other active protection programs including HIPs that block registry write access. After the scan, be sure re-enable ZoneAlarm Pro and any other active protection programs you have temporarily disabled.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner and click Accept

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Alright... Here goes...

When I try to turn off real time protection for Windows Defender I get the following error:

"Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x80070005. Access is denied."

Here is the log file turned back by rootchk:

********************************* ROOTCHK-(28-12-07)-LOG, by ejvindh

NOTICE!! Rootchk is not being updated anymore, and is thus gradually getting outdated.
Last update was made 28-12-07

The rootkits that are detected by this tool were not found.

Can you post the Kaspersky report

Then do this

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

2. Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Sorry, guess my last post was too long. On Kaspersky -

I can't find the Kaspersky report. I ran Kaspersky two days ago or so after my initial post. I tried to save it to my desktop, but it didn't appear on my desktop. When I tried to save it again, it asked me if I wanted to replace it, so it did get saved, it just wasn't appearing. I tried to open it from the save as file, but it denied me access. I still can't find it anywhere, even if I go into "save as".

I also can't run a new report at the moment because it's giving me an error -

"Update process FAILED. No further antivirus actions can be performed! Attention, you must be online to activate Kaspersky Online Scanner, since the latest Anti-Virus bases version must be downloaded prior to scan. Otherwise we cannot guarantee detection of latest viruses. [21]"

I am, however, online, so I'm not sure why I'm getting the error. I'll follow your instructions for HJT.

Here's a report from avast! that I ran. If I remember right, it seemed to show the same things I saw on the Kaspersky report, although I think it noted fewer locked items.

avast! log :

Alright - I tried to run super anti-spyware with the settings you gave me. Unfortunately, after 10+ hours of scanning I gave it up. It seemed like it kept coming round to DriverStore/FileRepository/... Anyways, here is what the log did come back with:

I've also noticed that my internet icon in my toolbar is showing an x, even though I'm connected and when I scroll over it it's saying "Connection status: unknown Access is denied." Not sure if that means anything.

Also, I'm still running without Norton since I can't get it to run as it says it needs to be 'activated'. Should I do anything about that at this point?

Well you could remove Norton and replace it with another program.

Your logs are clean ! We need to do a few things

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

* Click Start > Control Panel.
* Click Add/Remove Programs.
* Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
* Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from
here

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

I'm not finding anything with JRE in the name. I tried to uninstall Java, but I got an error: 'The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact you support personnel for assistance.'

I'm wondering if the check disk thing it ran on startup which lead to this messed up my registries. What I'm seeing about the windows installer issue seems to indicate that it's a registry issue. Could this be the case?

Also, when I'm trying to create the restore point it's unable to find the location when I copy '%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe' into run...

No that wouldn't be responsible.

Sorry. So I don't need to create a restore point, then? Just continue on to the cleanmgr?

Well, as far as I can tell, the cleanmgr went fine. I then installed SpywareBlaster and IE-Spyad. However, after installing spyad I went to check the restricted sites and Tools -> Internet Options would not open...

Then when trying to install SpywareGuard I received the following error:

'C:\Windows\system32\stdole2.tlb

Unable to register the type library: RegisterTypeLib failed; code 0x8002801C.

Click Retry to try again, Ignore to proceed anyway (not recommended), or Abort to cancel installation.'

I did manage to follow the rest of the steps, I believe without issue. And I do use Firefox 95% of the time or so.

I noticed one other thing in updating my host file. The windows folder DRVstore is blue and empty. Does this mean anything?
