Hello

I'm in desperate need of help. This virus is actually giving me anxiety and I'm starting to have chest pains.

I'm such an idiot! I downloaded a suppossed video codec from a link that was hosted by cnn (so I thought it was trusted) and it downloaded a file titled "install_player3913012" And ever since then a popup comes up and says: your system has been infected with a dangerous file ...download this spyware removal tool or malicious files will be lost. Obviously I don't ever download it.

I followed preparation guidelines but it took forever! The one thing I did not do was reload everything in ms startup from the msconfig option. I didn't do that bec I'm terribly frightened to do so. There are some files from a previous virus from years ago, that i successfully removed but stil remained there, so I was advised to just uncheck it since the virus was quarantined. It's one of those toolbar things. And also I should tell you that my Norton Antivirus says it's unable to access the engine to complete a scan. I want to reinstall but I'm scared to do so without your input first.

And worse off!! I just found out while writing this post that it must be messing with my keyboard because as i am trying to type, the cursor automatically goes back 1 space and places the letter there. I had to edit this post for it to be spelled correctly. I can't go on like this. To get a better idea of what I mean I'll show you what it does if I don't edit it:

Helo Iam hving trouble wthm cmputerand I' aking geesk to og.com to help m because i dot know wher else to turn .eneutmm oy ia l

THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE, I AM POSITIVE IT IS BECAUSE OF THAT DOWNLOADed virus.

Please, kindly extend your help to me. I live on my computer and I am absolutely paralyzed in my professional and personal life due to this issue. I hope someone will give me a detailed and thorough analysis and also tell me if you found things that are bad but not related to the issue I indicated. I willing to do a complete and thorough clean, I'm willing to do anything. I am desperate, this really has caused monumental strain for me as I have important deadlines to reach. Your help will be eternally appreciated.

Regards,
Vy

1) Open Notepad: Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad.
Click on Format and ensure that Wordwrap is unchecked. If it isn't, uncheck it.

2) Download Combofix by sUBs from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click combo.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
  • Please Note: This may require the PC to be rebooted so close any programs you have open before you start.
  • When the tool has finished, it will produce a log C:\ComboFix.txt - copy and paste it into your next reply.
  • Post a fresh HJT log as well.
  • Let me know how the PC is behaving.
Please Note:
  • Do not mouse click in the combofix window while it is running - this may cause your system to hang/crash.
  • Disable Script Blocking if you have Norton Anti Virus installed, and your version has this option, as it will interfere with the normal working of this tool.
  • Should any security program warnings appear, ignore them as they are false-positives - this tool isn't malicious.
3) Run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager...
  • Click Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

Hello Noviciate,

Thank you for your speedy reply! Here are the items you requested. There isn't any sign of that popup yet, but it wasn't happening every second. Sometimes it occurred when I opened internet explorer and this time I tested it and there was no sign of it. Also it looks as though I have a new internet explorer icon on my desktop, all of a sudden.

AND!!!

I think my keyboard and cursor problem is gone! I can't believe it!!! is it really fixed this easily?

By the way, that file I downloaded that assumingly caused me this problem is still on my desktop. Shouldn't I delete it?

Thanks!

CF targets the files that are created, and not the creator - if you've still got the installation file, delete it. Run the PC normally for 24 hours and then let me know how it's behaving. If there's any tidying up to do, we'll deal with that then.
