Internet Explorer 7 will open, and then a Microsoft window opens offering to send problem information to Microsoft, then IE closes. Thus I can not use IE 7. Micro Trend PC-Cillin detected TROJ_HUNTBAR.A, could this be the cause? I can get onto the internet with Firefox, but windows updates don't work automatically anymore and some sites seem to require IE. Can't uninstall IE. Have done all the pre-hijack this steps, except for Panda which required IE to operate, but detected no current malware. Thanks to anyone who may be able to help.

I include logs:

Hi there,

Welcome to GeeksToGo. My name is RatHat, and I will help you get through the process of cleaning the malware from your computer.

You have an information stealer trojan infecting your computer. From a clean computer, change all your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information.

Now lets get rid of the bugger!

OK, I need you to print out each post I make so that you can refer to it while we fix your computer. This is because there will be times when you are unable to be online to read my instructions, and I will want you to do everything very carefully. I also need you to follow my instructions in the order that they are given. If however, you cannot carry out one of them, please continue on with the next and let me know what you were unsuccessful with.

Next, I would like to make sure that you can view hidden files and folders;
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We need to get rid of one of the services running on your machine. To do this, copy (Ctrl +C) and paste (Ctrl +V) the text in the code box below to Notepad.
@echo off
sc stop Print Spooler Service
sc delete Print Spooler Service
exit
Save it to your desktop as File name: Service.cmd
Save as type: All Files
Once done, double click Service.cmd to run it. A command window will open briefly, then close. This is quite normal.
Please download DrWeb-CureIt & save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.
Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".
Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
  • Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
  • Back at the main window, click "Select drives" (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen)
  • Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
  • When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
    (This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
  • Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)
Please read this Combofix tutorial before continuing, then follow the instructions below.
Download ComboFix from Here, Here or Here to your Desktop. (If you already have ComboFix, please delete it and download this new version).
When asked to "Save As" save Combofix.exe as Combo-Fix.exe
  • Now physically disconnect from the internet and STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields)
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Save this log to your desktop as Combofix.txt and post it in your next reply.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Rathat,
Thanks for your informed help. I have followed all your steps and include all the logs. Dr.Web Sanner for Windows would not give me the option of "save report list", however it scanned 116880 files and found no infections.
The computer is running fine and IE 7 now opens and connects to the internet. Yay!
I have 2 other computers and run a home wireless network to keep the children happy. Is there any likelihood of similar infection on the other pc's, they both are running fine and are protected by Trend Micro PC Cillin. How should I check?
Hi Peter,
Glad to hear things are getting better. There is a possibility that the other computers could become infected, though if they all have AV's and firewall's installed, they may be OK. We can run a HijackThis scan on each of them later to check.
OK, could you post me the OTMoveIt log, and also run an online scan with Kaspersky, now that you have IE back.
Kaspersky WebScanner. Note: You must use Internet Explorer to run this scan.
Click the Accept button.
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display the results if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop as Kaspersky.txt.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
RatHat,
I did post what I thought was OTM log at the beginning of logs. Or do I need to do something else?
RatHat,
I did Kaspersky scan and ATF clean as instructed. Kaspersky found 2 viruses; the log follows. There didn't seem to be a clean-up option in Kaspersky?
OK, got the new glasses on! Kaspersky only gives a log of infections, it will not clean your computer. It is very accurate though, and one of my favourites for checking systems.
Now things are looking better, but we still have a bit of work left until I am happy you are clean.
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the box next to the entry listed below.
O23 - Service: Print Spooler Service (khsiwewiailu) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gxyhmwcqsfz.exe (file missing)
Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Run OTMoveIt2 again:
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\Documents and Settings\Peter\Shared\Top of Charts - 2003.wma
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kyg.exe

Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Open Notepad, and copy everything in the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy).
  • Save the Notepad file to your Desktop as OTM.txt.
  • Close OTMoveIt
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please include the contents of OTM.txt in your next reply.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Finally, download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

Got the right glasses on this morning and you are good to go Peter! :)

The first thing we need to do is to remove all the tools that you have used. This is so that should you ever be re-infected, you will download updated versions. It will also remove the quarantined Malware from your computer.

Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
Click the Clean up button
Click YES at the next prompt (list downloaded, Do you want to begin cleanup process?)
Click Yes to the reboot.

OK, lets carry out a few preventative steps to make sure you reduce the risk of further infections.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now lets Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove any infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected, but that's good news).
Turn OFF System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer.
Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Next, lets reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.

Reset Hidden/System Files & Folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another essential is to keep your computer updated with the latest operating system patches and security fixes. Windows Updates are constantly being revised to combat the newest hacks and threats, Microsoft releases security updates that help your computer from becoming vunerable. It is best if you have these set to download automatically.
Automatic Updates for Windows
  • Click Start.
  • Select Settings and then Control Panel.
  • Select Automatic Updates.
  • Click Automatic (recommended)
  • Choose a day and a time when you know the computer will be on and connected to the internet.
  • Click Apply then OK.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In addition to Windows updates, you also need to ensure that your version of Java is the latest.Click here to download the latest version (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4). Once downloaded, install it and then Reboot your computer.

It is most important that you also uninstall older versions of Java.
  • Click Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.
  • Delete all Java updates except Java ™ 6 Update 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OK, now lets download some preventative programs that will help to keep the nasties away! We will start with Anti Spyware programs. I would advise getting a couple of them at least, and running each at least once a month.
Anti Spyware
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy a powerful tool which can "search and destroy" nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
Note: If you find your system slows down after installing any of these, just uninstall it, or disable it from running at startup.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nearly done! If you like to use chat, MSN and Yahoo have vunerabilities that can leave you open to infections. There are however a couple of very good, Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN):

Instant Messengers~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lastly, it is a good idea to clear out all your temp files every now and again. This will help your computer from bogging down and slowing. It also can assist in getting rid of files that may contain malicious code that could re-infect your computer.

Temp File Cleaners
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Note: Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition.
  • ATF Cleaner A very powerful cleaning program for XP and Windows 2000 only. Note: You may have this already as part of the fixes you have run.

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I will keep this log open for the next couple of days, so if you have any further problems post another reply here.
OK, all the best, and stay safe!
Best regards,
RatHat
Thanks RatHat,
Sterling job. Everything seems to work and I am downloading those spyware programs as suggested. My children are mad for MSN and Bebo, so I will try the messenger programs as well.
You mentioned in an earlier post that we might run Hijack-this on my other 2 computers to check if they have been infected too. They both seem to be working fine and they both run Vista. What preparatory stuff should I do and would it be OK to post in this topic?
Thanks a million,
Liverman (Peter).
Peter,
As a precautionary measure, install the same Anti Spyware programs on the other computers. You can run a HijackThis log on each of them and post them in this topic, and I'll check them out.
Another thing you can do with your computer is to install the recovery console for XP. This will help you if, and big if, you should get infected in the future, as there is a trend with the virus writers to start attacking the master boot record, so that viruses load before windows.
Delete the version of Combofix that you have. Download a new version from Here, Here or Here and save it to your Desktop.
Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System.
Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.
Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Post the contents of that log.
RatHat
RatHat,
i have downloaded windows program, dropped into ComboFix, and a Windows End User Agreement for "Windows XP Home Edition SP 2 CD Boot Floppies" has appeared in a separate window. Is this right? The windows download was from the link you provided, but it did not appear to be for Recovery Console.
Help,
Peter.
Yep, that's right, let it install via Combofix, then post me the log that Combofix produces.
