Using the procedures and other information posted here seem to have cleaned up and corrected most of the damage from the dreaded azesearch browser hijacker, but still can't get Google (or the native MSIE) search engine to work from the toolbar (I get a "The page cannot be found" message when I enter a search). (It also appears that when I execute a search from the Google website, the results are filtered - can't be certain about this though.)

The steps I took to rid the MSIE toolbar of the Azesearch tool included running Adaware SE, Spybot S&D, CWShredder and HJT. I also searched and deleted all entries related Azesearch (based on the various posts and guides here) I could find in my directories and registry. This removed the Azesearch toolbar and allowed MSIE to run without triggering an alarm from Ad-Watch. However, after I reinstalled Google (from the Google website), it still won't run web searches (searches of Images, Groups, News, etc. DO run however.)

I have followed all of the steps in the " You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log, Required steps before posting your log" post.

Here's my most recent HJT log:

If you check the boxes in front of them on a HijackThis Scan and then Press Fix Checked they should go away. If a second scan shows them still ther we may need to edit the hosts file to clean them up.

Ron,

Fantastic! I deleted the Host entries as you suggested and a subsequent HJT scan indicated they were gone. Now everything seems back to normal: Google and MSN searches work just as before.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! What a pernicious, rotten piece of malware Azesearch is and how nice to be rid of it.

Incidentally, I noticed the Hosts entries, but just assumed they actually supported the Google, etc. sites; not prevented them from being accessed. Could you elaborate on what the Hosts variable does and how it was used to prevent accessing the legit search engines?

Lastly, my thanks to all the folks who created and support this wonderful resource, Geeks to Go. I'll be donating $$ to keep this site going and encourage *everyone* else who has learned from or benefitted from Geeks to Go to donate as well.

Oops. Not quite clean, I'm afraid. Just noticed that *sometimes* when I start MSIE (which I use rarely, now that I've discovered Firefox) some sort of "Adult Friend Finder" site *attempts* to start up (it starts briefly and then is closed - I suspect Ad-Aware or the MSIE popup blocker gets to it before it can completely initiliaze - or perhaps some of the files it needs were deleted in the initial clean up). It seems to happen the first time after I open MSIE following a reboot.

Anyhow, I think I found the culprit:

O2 - BHO: BHOMoneyGainer Class - {2559D0B1-AF60-4BD5-965D-0E51383A6367} - C:\WINDOWS\shginas.dll

I used HJT to delete the BHO entry and then deleted shginas.dll (and I believe there was also a shginas.xml file I deleted) from the Windows\ directory. I did have to reboot in safe mode to delete the shginas entries.

Rebooted into normal mode and everything seems to be working fine now.

To be sure, I've rerun HJT and posted the log below. Would appreciate it if you could look it over and let me know if there's anything else there I need to stomp on or check out further.

BTW, I can find very little on the shginas stuff on the 'net. Any idea what it is and what it does?

I see three minor things:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost;c1154059-a

Have no idea what the c1154059-a means. Don't suppose it hurts anything tho.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {30A56549-9D5B-4D34-AFA7-440A7F0538A9} - (no file)

This is all that is left of opnste.exe
http://www3.ca.com/s...px?id=453078831
Possible that Ad_watch won't let you delete the reference. Doesn't really hurt anything.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DynDNS Updater] "C:\DOCUME~1\Wes\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX42.640\DynDNS.exe"

It's not clear to me exactly what this thing does. http://www.dyndns.org is its home base. If you know and it is something you can't live without then it should be moved to a real location. Otherwise my rule of thumb is that a program that runs from a Temp folder is malware.
