My computer is pissing me off

I can see the little line on the bottom of the screen; it's the taskbar. Everytime I try to resize it so I can access the Start Menu, it won't work. It isn't locked or anything.

My brother thinks I'm a yutz when it comes to computers, so it would really help if I showed him I'm not retarded... Well... you guys are not retarded, but he doesn't need to know that.

Anyway, I'm desperate here. I've got no clue what to do. It's a simple problem, but I can't stand it.

EDIT: By the way, if it helps, whenever I right-click on the line, the Lock the Taskbar writing is grey, and when I change it to auto-hide and back, I can see a little bit of the start button and the taskbar, but when I try to resize it it still doesn't work.

Welcome to GTG k9unit k9 <_<

Some critical Windows files may be corrupted. To correct this have your Windows XP CD handy and:

1. Go to "Start", then "Run"
2. Type "sfc.exe /scannow" and press Enter

After it completes restart and see if the problem persists.

My dad got the Windows XP CD from his friend. He should be a while coming back.

Anyway, I recently found another problem. When I try to open Windows Media Player, my computer says "Can't perform operation, low memory". Could these two problems be linked? Should the whachamadoohicky you told me about fix this problem?

No, what I told you won't fix that problem. To fix that problem (and possibly your first), let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results. <_<

Sorry to dissapoint you, but when I click on the link, even that won't work. Could you at least give me a URL to paste into my browser? Or should I just right-click it and go to "Save As"?

Well k9unit k19, your computer has a number of spyware programs that we need to remove. For more info on spyware see the Spyware FAQ link in my signature.

Let's start with a few free programs:
CoolWebShredder is the first to run. Here's why: If a CoolWebSearch variant is indeed running on your system, it may actually prevent you from running spyware scans. It is smart enough to detect efforts to detect it, and stop them. Download CWShredder to your desktop or other location. Close all browser windows, double click the CWShredder icon to run, then click the Fix -> button. When finished, reboot and run Spybot Search & Destroy.

Spybot Search & Destroy Download and install. Start Spybot S&D using the "Spybot-S&D (easy mode)" link from your Start menu . Click the Search for updates button, if any are found then click the Download Updates button. After all updates are downloaded, click the Check for problems button. When the scan is complete, place a check next to anything marked in red, then click the Fix selected problems button. You may need to run Spybot S&D multiple times to remove all infections.

Ad-aware Open Ad-Aware and use the Check for updates now link. Download and accept the latest reference file. When finished click the Start button. When done scanning, the Abort button will change to Next. Click the Next button. Right-click in the Scanning Results window and click "Select all objects". Then click the "Next" button and confirm that you want to delete the selected entries.

When finished, Reboot your computer. Finally, reply to this post with a new HiJackThis log so we can look for any nasties that may have been missed. <_<

Yeah, about that... I'm going to need URLs. The problem is, I have to right-click and save the links you give me. Everytime I click on the link to dl the program, the computer thinks it's in my desktop.

Thanks a lot, bro'. My pops and brother both think I should leave all this stuff to the professionals. I started cleaning out my computer, but my dad stopped me half way through and said that he had a "gut feeling" you were screwing with me. So, I uninstalled all the programs you gave me.

Anyway, I still don't think that and I know it worked because when I went to ign.com, a lot of the spyware ads that are usually there weren't.

To any of the people out whose parents are giving them $h!t, don't get a professional, leave it to these noble geeks. Maybe you may have a shot at a fix-it-yourself job, but I don't. But don't cry for me, smile for me, for I have futureshop warranty on my computer, and they'll fix it for me free of charge.

Later days and keep rockin' the free world.

I'm sorry to hear that <_<. Thanks for the kind words :D. We actually are professionals here. Your dad thought wrong. We were only helping you clean out all that junk off your pc that souldn't be there. We can fix your problem here and now if you can just convince your dad. We are professionals who help users with their pc problems. The only difference, we do it online for free and faster. These programs I gave you were only programs designed to get rid of the adware/spyware junk on your computer. Those warranty people might reformat your entire hard drive, erasing everything on your computer, call it fixed and make you install everything again. If they don't do that, they'll just use the programs I suggested to get rid of the junk and then do the last cleaning up with hijackthis. Yeah, that's the truth. They'll just use the same programs! I'm glad you found us and please find a way to make convince your dad that we truely are professionals here. If he wants proof, just look at all the many posts though out the forums on this site.

We're free and fast. You can't say that for "futureshop".

My brother and I finally convinced my Dad. I blocked all the Spyware on my PC but the Taskbar disappears on me sometimes and I have to do the upgrade thingy with my Windows disk to make it work.

By the way, I have been having trouble with a "Wild Tangent" program. It took me a couple of tries to get rid of it using Spybot S&D, and still during startup a warning comes telling me "C:\Program Files\Wild Tangent\... couldn't start. When I look at the program files, there is no Wild Tangent folder.
