Hello and thanks for taking the time to read my question:

I have the linksys wireless-g router (2 desktops 1 laptop attached)

connects to the desktop and I have a wireless card for my laptop

this just started today on my laptop (windows xp)

the error "Windows System error duplicate name exists on the network"

I checked under my computer, properties, computer name under both systems and the names are different as I thought


Is this a problem? virus? Have I been hacked?

Did you check all 3 computers? You say you checked "both". If you have a wired and wireless connection active on the same computer, you may get this message.

ok, i check the other computer and there was no "name" on that system.

I went back to the other comuters and changed the names.

my laptop had my first and last name, the desktop had our last name, therefore i changed everything.

The thing is after I posted my question the laptop didnt have that error any longer even before the name change.

So i guess everything seems to be working ok.

I guess Im worried since i had a virus in the past and not sure how people "get into your system"
