Hello,

I have the following problem: I must have picked up malware from the internet. I first realized there was a problem when I kept getting a lot of advertisements and pop-up windows when using Internet Explorer. Sometimes I would open Internet Explorer and instead of going to my homepage, I would go to another site.

A couple of days ago I tried running various anti-spyware software, and some of them found viruses are removed them (either completely or partially), but the problem remained. Some of the names of viruses that the software told me I had were: Savenow, Downloader, Virtumonde, Vundo Variant.

Also, at certain points when I was using the computer, everything on the desktop and the taskbar of Windows would disappear for a couple of seconds and then reappear again.

I went to your page http://www.geekstogo...-Log-t2852.html
and tried to follow the steps, but when I was scanning using some of the software, everything except those would disappear for a couple of seconds and then reappear, so I am not sure whether the anti-spyware were effective or not.

I also installed some of the antivirus software that are mentioned in that page, namely the Zone Labs Security firewall and the AVG Anti-virus, and after that whenever I opened Windows Explorer, the following two warnings would appear, one after another, coming from the Zone Labs firewall:

1) Repeat Program
Internet Explorer is trying to access the trusted zone.
Identification: Unknown
Application: iexplore.exe
Destination IP: 127.0.0.1: Port 1082 (or some other port)

2) Dangerous Behavior
Internet Explorer is trying to monitor your mouse movements and keyboard strokes
Application: iexplore.exe

How can I resolve this problem? Today, before writing this message, again I tried to follow the instructions on the page
http://www.geekstogo...-Log-t2852.html
and here are the outcomes:

1) Everything went smoothly with ATF Cleaner, System Restore
2) Everything OK with AVG Anti-spyware. Here is the report:

4) Online Panda ActiveScan: I couldn't run it. I tried running it from

Firefox but in the page they said that minimum requirements were to have

Internet Explorer 5.0 or later. I didn't want to use the Internet

Explorer because of all the warnings from the firewall. In fact, at this

point I uninstalled Internet Explorer and installed it again, but the

problem still remained!

5) AVG Antivirus: I ran this again, it showed that everything was

alright.

6) Windows Update: When I had tried to download SP1a a couple of days

ago, I wasn't able to because I must have SP2 according to the website.

Today I wasn't able to download anything, when I went to the webpage it

displayed a message saying that I must have Microsoft Internet Explorer

in order to download updates from them. Although it gave a link to the

Microsoft Download Center (if I insisted on using another browser), I

still didn't find anything I could download from Firefox.

7) I rebooted the computer but the firewall keep issuing me the same

warnings.

8) HijackThis: I did not scan the computer using any of the anti-spyware,

but I do have Ad-Watch and SpywareGuard running right now. I hope that

this is not a problem.

Could you please tell me what to do? I don't think the problem is just Vundo, because I tried running VundoFix.exe but the problem remained. I think the first malware that was detected on my computer after all the ads started popping up was Downloader. Before installing AVG Antivirus, I had an antivirus from Symantec, so I looked at the website of Symantec concerning these viruses (Downloader, Vundofix, Virtumonde) but it didn't help. It said that I should look try to find certain keys in the registry, but I found none of those.

Oh, another thing that I forgot to say but might be important is that in the beginning the pop up ads would appear in both Internet Explorer and Firefox. After some point though they only appear in Internet Explorer. Moreover, lately when I went to the Internet Explorer and tried to clear the history (all the cookies, temporary files, data from forms, passwords etc) it seemed that it didn't really delete anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi Loizos

welcome to geekstogo :)

sorry to keep you waiting. lets do a deeper scan of your machine for me to analyse.

(if your problem has already been resolved, could you just let me know so that i an move onto other logs to help others, thanks)

also, could you turn word wrap off on your notepad, it make reading the logs harder

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

you may need to post the logs over 2 replies to ensure all the information is posted.

Hi andrewuk :)

Here's the current state of affairs:

I had to remove the firewall that I was using (ZoneLabs), because the trial had expired, and I installed another one called Kerio (one of the other firewalls you guys recommend in your webpage). I hadn't used the Internet Explorer since then. After seeing your reply, I decided to try and see if I get the same error message. It turns out that I don't. So that can mean one of 2 things: either the problem has been resolved somehow, or the new firewall doesn't detect the malware.

I would feel much safer if we did the deeper analysis. I tried to download Deckcard's System Scanner, but the link doesn't seem to work. (I guess I could just google it, but I've become kind of paranoid with viruses lately that I'd feel much safer if you sent me the link).

Also, now that some things changed on my laptop (uninstalling one firewall, installing another etc), would you like me to post new versions of the reports I sent in my first email?

Thanks for the notepad tip - I was actually wondering how I could deactivate it!

I really appreciate your help!!!
Take care,
Loizos

hmm.....link seems ok. lets try another one.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

in your next reply could i see:
1. the combofix log
2. a new hijackthis log

.....and remember to turn wordwrap off on your notepad, thanks

if you cant get combofix to work, then just post the new hijackthis log

Hi again,

the first link you sent me for dss.exe eventually worked. I also ran combofix, although I realized at some point in the middle of scanning that I had forgot to disable SpywareGuard. Nevertheless, I will post the results here. Also, I went to the page with instructions about how to disable the firewall and antivirus, but it didn't have the ones that I have installed. I have the Kerio firewall (which I think I disabled correctly) and the Symantec Antivirus version 10.1.6. For that one I wasn't sure if it was disabled completely, there was an action called Unload Service but it said that if I chose that it wouldn't run Live Update etc etc, so I did something else instead. Are there instructions about disabling this software anywhere?

Anyway, I have the following things for you:

1) Results of dss.exe, namely main.txt and extra.txt
2) Results of ComboFix.exe (ComboFix.txt)
3) Results of HijackThis (hijackthis.log, uninstall_list.txt)

I post these in different posts to make sure that everything is copied.

Thank you very much :)

in this post we will remove the rest of the malware i can see.

firstly a question. you are operating from behind this ProxyServer = 194.154.128.65 which is linked to this company name and address: Spidernet Services Limited, SpiderNet Services Ltd., suite 301 CY-1082, Nicosia, Cyprus. do you recognise it, is it your ISP? or company?

secondly: would i be right in thinking that your antivirus program is norton? if so, you also have a-squared Anti-Malware Service on your machine. running two antivirus programs can cause conflict between them and slow down your machine, as well as provide less protection, not more.

thirdly: the fix

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fqxgyikw.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\7047E7D3B2.sys

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\ssqqppm]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{03c8bcbc-0adb-11dc-9a65-00123fe6a30e}]

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

Posted Image

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

in your next reply could i see:
1. the answer to the proxy server question
2. the answer to the antivirus program question
3. the combofix log
4. a new hijackthis log

Hello,

thank you very much for doing this, I really appreciate it! Here are the things you requested:

1. Yes, I recognize this company name and address. Right now I am at the United States, but that company is my innternet provider whenever I go back to my country.
2. In fact my antivirus program is Symantec Antivirus version 10.1.6. I installed a-squared thinking that it was an anti-spyware program, not an anti-virus program. I thought that running more than 1 anti-malware was alright, assume you only have 1 antivirus, is that not the case?
If a-squared will cause problems, then I will uninistall it (it was a 30-day trial anyway). Also I am using some other software like Ad-aware, SpyWareGuard, etc. Should I remove those too?

3. Combofix.txt: When I ran it the first time I copied the contents of the text file but I forgot to paste them, so I had to run it again. This is what the text file contained the 2nd time:

In fact my antivirus program is Symantec Antivirus version 10.1.6.

yep, that is also norton :)

I thought that running more than 1 anti-malware was alright, assume you only have 1 antivirus, is that not the case?

you should only run one antivirus and one anti-spyware active at any one time. if you have 2 antivirus running then they conflict with each other and slow down your machine and indeed provide less protection, not more.

If a-squared will cause problems, then I will uninistall it (it was a 30-day trial anyway).

it has anti-virus elements about it, so you should uninstall it.

Also I am using some other software like Ad-aware, SpyWareGuard, etc. Should I remove those too?

they are ok. spywareguard is the active antispyware. ad-aware is an on demand program, so it wont conflict with your other programs. once we have cleaned your machine i will leave you with a list of additional free programs you can install to enhance the protection of your machine.

your logs are looking better. in this post we will clear your temp folders and do a couple of scans to flush out any further infections on your machine.

====STEP 1====
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

====STEP 2====
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

====STEP 3====
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

in your next reply could i see:
1. the Malwarebytes log
2. the kaspersky scan log
3. a new hijackthis log

Hi Loizos

congratulations, your logs are clean :)

how is your computer running now?

in this post we will clear the fix tools, reset your restore points (there will be infections lurking in there) and i will leave you with a list of ideas of how to enhance your machine against future infection

====STEP 1====
clearing away the fix tools and resetting your restore points
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

    • Posted Image

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.
if you have problems here, let be know and we will clear the fix tools and reset your restore points another way.

====AND FINALLY====
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
