I go to the Windows XP setup screen and it can't find a previous version of Windows on the system!! After I agree to the license by pressing F8, I am
taken to a screen titled "Windows XP Home Edition Setup" which shows a list of the partitions I have on my hard disk [ The first is labeled "-: Partition1
[FAT] 47 MB ( 39 MB free)" the second "C: Partition2 [NTFS] 238363 MB ( 215628 MB free)" the third and last is "Unpartitioned space 8 MB ". There
is no option, as shown on the link you gave me, to repair an existing windows installation. Maybe the Dell Windows XP reinstall disk doesn't support
reinstallation over an existing installation... I really really hope that I didn't just lose all my data and now have to wipe the hard drive. It perhaps would
be better in the future to remind people to back up their files before running a potentially dangerous malware removal program, that could render their
operating system inoperable. Is there any way to fix this? Are there any other computer experts from this site that you could ask to look at this
situation? It would be great if I could find a solution.

It is unfortunate that this happened.
It is a good idea to always back up your data on your own.
The program did not do this the Malware did and as you can see malware is unpredictable.

I am having other experts look at this situation.

No you do not have to format.
Just be patient and it will get figured out.

For now start a thread Here and see if they cannot get you up and running.

You can come back here and finish the cleanup after they get you figured out.

Hello openmindedlogic...

Let's see if we can get you to a backup of the registry using recovery console. If you run into a problem or have a question, please ask before continuing with the instructions.

Boot into Recovery Console as you did before and log on to the current installation.

When you get to the Recovery Console prompt, type cd \ and press "Enter".

Type cd system~1\_resto~1 and press "Enter".

Type dir and press "Enter".

After you press enter you will see a list of folders (like rp1, rp2) If the list of restore points has more than one page then press the "Enter" key until you reach the end of the list

Type cd rp {number of the second to last folder in the list} and press "Enter".
Note: Example: cd rp9 if the last restore point is rp10

Type cd snapshot and press "Enter".

Type copy _registry_machine_system c:\windows\system32\config\system and press "Enter".

Type copy _registry_machine_software c:\windows\system32\config\software and press "Enter".

Type exit and press "Enter".

Your PC will reboot.

=======================

If you get an access denied error when doing the above, then do the following at the recovery console:

Type cd \ and press "Enter".

Type cd windows\system32\config and press "Enter".

Type ren system system.bak and press "Enter".

Type exit and press "Enter".

Your PC will reboot, go back into the Recovery Console and start from the beginning.

I was 'denied access' at first, but after following your instructions I was able to get to C:\system~1\_resto~1 , when I types dir, I got the following
0 .
0 ..
134 drivetable.txt
19256 fifo.log
0 RP414
24 _driver.cfg
24744 _filelst.cfg

The 7 files are listed with their byte sizes. I see one "rp" file, but it's size is 0, so I'm not sure thats what is wanted...

I ran into this once before. Not a terrific sign, but we used the one restore point listed and the machine did start. Use the one that's shown...we haven't got a lot of choice. If this doesn't work out, we still have an option open to us.

My pleasure! :)

You should post another log for kahdah to see if the infection is still there. I know the experts have been discussing this and know where the problem was...and how to get to it.

Just a heads up you have a very bad infection called Delf that can be very difficult to remove.
As you know the danger involved with this malware please proceed with caution.

========================================================
Download ComboFix from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
