I am having boot problems and and apparently have narrowed down my problem to be either a bad hard disk, or a virus. I performed a System Recovery using the original disks (Sony Vaio - for my laptop PCG-GR390), and the problem persists. My question is... is it possible for a virus to survive on the computer after I perform a System Recovery?

It depends, if it was a full recovery i.e. wiped the drive. Then the probability is low
However, if you just over wrote the files i.e. you still had your documents and settings after the install then the possibility is yes
