Thanks for this

Deleted everthing but 5 that did not give that option. Everything re-installed but there are no longer hidden items

Still no sound - Control Panel/ Sound says "no device installed"!

Will try and repair with my XP disk when I have some space later

I have tried to run Repair install several times but always reach a point where there is a problem reading the disk.

I borrowed another XP Home installation disk. I reached the point where it had begun deleting folders and then it had a problem reading the disk. It suggested there would be files missing that I would need to add manually. When it booted I have a different layout of desktop and no settings tab with display properties

I guess I will need to do a fresh install of XP or a find a version of Linux - (though I only have 125 MB RAM)

Thanks for all your help

May be the CD drive. This happens to me quite regularly as I work on a lot of older systems. The drive will work once XP is installed but causes various problems during install.

I would borrow a CD drive and try it, see if it makes a difference.

Thanks for this

A friend brought round an XP Home CD and a CD Drive. The Repair install worked with the CD.

I have sound. Problem solved.

Thanks
