Hi, My computer has recently encountered the antispywareupdates.net problem. My desktop has turned blue and has text on it reading "Warning: Spyware threat has been detected on your PC." I also have yellow triangles in my taskbar that constantly warn me of Spyware and send me to a fake website called antispywareupdates.net. Also, occasional red popups occur that claim to be Windows Security System warnings, but I believe these are also fake because they send me to antispywareupdates.net. I've noticed quite a few people have been experiencing this problem, and they have been able to solve it with help from the experts on this website. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is my HijackThisLog...

Hi,

* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hi,

I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.co...cle.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Then,

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O3 - Toolbar: HP view - {B2847E28-5D7D-4DEB-8B67-05D28BCF79F5} - c:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\HPDTLK02.dll <== not required
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • For Platform, select "Windows"
  • For language, select your language
  • Read the License agreement and then Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement".
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Thanks again for your help. My computer seems to be running a lot more smoothly now. The yellow triangles in the taskbar are gone, the red popups are gone, and the antispywareupdates.net website is no longer popping up. However, my desktop is still blue and has the Spyware warning across it, and my task manager is still disabled.

Here is a fresh HiJackThis Log:

Hi,

For your Taskmanager..

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableTaskMgr"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableTaskMgr"=-

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

For your desktop..

Look if this file is present and delete it: C:\WINDOWS\default.htm

I don't see an Active desktop being set here in your log, so, rightclick your desktop, properties > wallpaper and select another wallpaper there.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Hi, I tried your instructions to fix my TaskManager, but it didn't work. I followed all of the instructions correctly, but once the fix.reg file was on my desktop, it wouldn't open. I would double click it and it was just unresponsive. I tried redoing that set of instructions multiple times, but still got the same result. Before I made my first post on here, I looked over this old post to diagnose my problem. It looks like this staff member took a different approach to fixing the TaskManager:

http://www.geekstogo...se-t187314.html

A little ways down the page, the instructor gives a list of things to copy into a notepad, then has them save it as a CFScript.txt, and has them drag that CFScript.txt into a program called ComboFix. Maybe that way would work?

Also, I was able to find the C:\\WINDOWS\default.htm file, and deleted it as your directions said. That got rid of the blue desktop with the warning across it, but replaced it with a plain black desktop. So I went to change my background and I noticed 2 files in the background choices that have never been there. Usually your choices are picture files, but these two had the Internet logo next to them. One was called "welcome", and it was that same blue screen, but no warning written across it. The other was called "default", and that is the black one it set as my new desktop. I was able to locate where the "welcome" one was at and deleted it, but was unable to find the one titled "default". When my computer starts up. It first shows my old background picture, but then goes to that one titled "default." Thanks again for your time.

Hi,

I guess you did something wrong with the regfix there... the cfscript on the other site uses the exact same regfix as I posted above, but in my case, I also covered the one under the HKLM key, since it's present there as well.

Actually, by default, Combofix already covers the taskmanager restriction and fixes that one automatically.

Please select another background picture and click the apply button, because as long as you don't select a new one, it won't automatically change it, even though you removed the html files.

Anyway, let's have another look as well and use Combofix as there may still be leftovers present..

* Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that in your next reply.

Thanks for the help. After that last set of instructions, everything seems to be back to normal. My desktop is back and those "welcome" and "default" desktops are gone. My TaskManager is also back to normal. Everything seems to be fine, but I'd like to be 100% sure that my computer is clean. Any advice on how to be sure? Here is my Combofix Log and a new HiJackThis Log.

Hi,

This looks OK again.

The Combofix log doesn't show any leftovers either except for one it already deleted. :)

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Alright, I completed your last instruction. My computer seems to be back in perfect working order now. I think it's safe to say this problem has been fixed. Thanks again for all of your help. I don't think I would've have ever been able to solve this problem had it not been for you and the geekstogo.com forum. :)

One more thing, should I delete that Malewarebytes' Anti-Maleware program on my computer or should I keep it for future scans?

Here is one final HiJackThis Log just in case.

Hi,

Everything looks OK here :)

should I delete that Malewarebytes' Anti-Maleware program on my computer or should I keep it for future scans?

You can keep it for future on demand scans. Make sure you use the update function first before you perform a scan with it.

Glad I could help. :)

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
