My comp is acting crazy nowadays. I installed Mcafee antivirusscan Enterprise 8.5.0i one month ago as my univ provides it free of charge. Now within last one week my comp has started to get unresponsive. When I see it in taskbar, it shows that Mcshield.exe is using 50% to 99% CPu. I tried everyhting you asked before posting Hijack this log. it did clean my comp but the problem remains. It works ok for 45-60 mins but then it again starts acting up. Below are all the reports of various cans I ran. Can Anybody tell me what else I can Do? Thankx

Hi,

Please read this Blogpost: http://miekiemoes.bl...fee-lately.html

As you already said, you installed McAfee recently and then the problems started...

I almost forgot..

Please uninstall BitAccelerator and Connectionservices via software > add/remove programs.

Then reboot.

After reboot, navigate to and delete the following folders if still present:

C:\Program Files\BitAccelerator
C:\Program Files\ConnectionServices

Your scanners already deleted it partially, but the folders need to go as well.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I have removed both programs as you suggested. But regarding Mcafee , I have a dilemma. I don't have any other antivirus software. If I remove it what should I use? Should I wait for 1-2 days after removing these programs to see if the problem is gone?
This might be a bit off topic for the post but I have another question. During all these scans I installed so many spyware removal programs( Lavasoft Adware, Spybot search and destroy, AVG spyware removal, Super antispyware) and also I have webroot spy sweeper( expired version). Which of these I should keep and which I should remove?
Thanks again. Appreciate your help

Hi,

I have a dilemma. I don't have any other antivirus software. If I remove it what should I use? Should I wait for 1-2 days after removing these programs to see if the problem is gone?

Actually, if you uninstall McAfee, you should already notice a difference immediately after reboot (no hogging mcshield.exe anymore etc.. since they are parts of McAfee).
You can download and install a new Antivirus afterwards. Look in my signature below under Antivirus for the ones I recommend. There are some free ones there as well. For example, Avira is a great free Antivirus.

During all these scans I installed so many spyware removal programs( Lavasoft Adware, Spybot search and destroy, AVG spyware removal, Super antispyware) and also I have webroot spy sweeper( expired version). Which of these I should keep and which I should remove?

Basically, you can have more than 1 Antispyware scanner installed (never install more than 1 Antivirus btw), but it's not really required to let them all start up with Windows anyway, running in the background... These scanners have the option to disable realtime protection. So you can scan with them once in a while (an on demand scan instead).
As for Spysweeper - I suggest you uninstall it since it has expired. Because it won't protect your system anyway, and won't remove malware if it has expired.

Edit.. Sidenote... In case you would have problems with properly uninstalling McAfee..
(Only use this tool if uninstalling didn't work or McAfee was not properly uninstalled.)

* Download and run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe).
Running the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool (MCPR.exe) removes all 2005, 2006, and 2007 versions of McAfee consumer products.
  • McAfee Security Center
  • McAfee VirusScan
  • McAfee Personal Firewall Plus
  • McAfee Privacy Service
  • McAfee SpamKiller
  • McAfee Wireless Network Security
  • McAfee SiteAdvisor
  • McAfee Data Backup
  • McAfee Network Manager
  • McAfee Easy Network
  • McAfee AntiSpyware
Download the removal tool from http://download.mcaf...atches/MCPR.exe
  • Click Save and save the file to any folder on the computer.
  • Navigate to the folder where the file is saved.
  • Double-click MCPR.exe.
  • Click Run. A Command Line window will be displayed, and then close automatically. Wait for a second Command Line window to be displayed.
Note: Do not double-click MCPR.exe again, you may have to wait up to 1 minute for the next window to appear.
After the second window appears, the program will begin the cleanup.
  • Observe the installation, which could take several minutes. The following message will be displayed in the Command Line window:
The machine must reboot to complete the un-installation. Reboot now? [y.n]
  • Press Y on the keyboard.
  • Wait for the computer to restart.
All McAfee products are now removed from your computer.
These McAfee removal instructions can be found at http://ts.mcafeehelp...sp?docid=408302

Wow .. That was a fast response. Removed the webroot spysweeper. Downloaded Avira But not yet installed. I am going to give Mcafee 24 hours to monitor its performance. If it goes again on resource hogging even once, I will do as you said. Thanks for your prompt reply. :) :)
