Hi. I had a similar problem with the same thing that he is talking about and my virusscan and anti-spyware programs wouldn't remove it either. I didn't follow any of your directions for removing the malware because I tried to fix it myself before I saw this, but I also found and was able to delete a file called spoolsrv32.exe that was trying to access the internet. Everything runs fine on my computer except I am missing tabs under display properties and I think that there is still some malware on my computer. Can you help me out?

Hi Firebert and welcome to Geeks to Go,
I split your post and created a new topic for you, Please reply to this topic only,
It's next to impossible to deal with more than 1 person in a topic,

Thanks.

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT* Be sure you know how to VIEW HIDDEN FILES

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field) MAKE SURE TO ENTER ALL FILE PATHS!:

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you recieve an error message "PendingRenameOperation...." and your computer doesn't restart, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files <-WILL be there!
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Reboot into normal mode.

*Download and install Registrar Lite version 2.00
*Double click the purple Registrar Lite icon on your desktop.
*Copy the line below and paste it into the "Address" field (located at the top) of the program:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

*Click the "Go" button.
*It will take you into the "Policies" folder.
*Locate the "System" folder (in the right panel)
*If found, right-click on the System folder and go to Delete
*Be very careful that you only delete the System folder that is inside the Policies folder.

Reboot your computer again.

1.) Download the Hoster from HERE Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Download: http://www.mvps.org/.../DelDomains.inf
To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log.

We will have somemore to clean after you have run through this

I was getting errors trying to use killbox and I couldn't find any of the folders that you said may have been there, but that's probably because I deleted a few things before I first posted here. In any case, I ignored the errors and went on and it seems like everything else you said worked. The missing tabs in Display Properties are back also.

Hi Firebert
Ok looking much better
  • Please set your system to show
all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

  • Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check mark next to the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://drsearch4u.com/sp.htm
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://drsearch4u.com/index.htm
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://drsearch4u.com/sp.htm
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://drsearch4u.com/index.htm
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System\spoolsrv32.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [mtlchqw] c:\windows\dayiuta.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WindowsFY] C:\WP.EXE
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [juufdcr] c:\windows\bmquxqx.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [chilwya] c:\windows\irbofbm.exe
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {CD293A6B-27BA-4896-A22F-C84B0DD044C2} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {CD293A6B-27BA-4896-A22F-C84B0DD044C2} - (no file) (HKCU)
    O21 - SSODL: OLE Module - {0656A137-B161-CADD-9777-E37A75727E78} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\thun32.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

  • Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

    C:\WINDOWS\System\spoolsrv32.exe
    c:\windows\dayiuta.exe
    C:\WP.EXE
    c:\windows\bmquxqx.exe
    c:\windows\irbofbm.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\thun32.dll

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
    C:\WINDOWS\System\spoolsrv32.exe
    c:\windows\dayiuta.exe
    C:\WP.EXE
    c:\windows\bmquxqx.exe
    c:\windows\irbofbm.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\thun32.dll

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

    Let the system reboot.
Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Nice job your log is clean !
How is it running ?
Please use the following suggestion to help prevent reinfection

Download the following program, For keeping crap off your system to begin with
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests. Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Download Spyware Blaster

Keep Ad-aware and Spybot handy, Check them for updates prior to running and run them weekly
Same with your Anti Virus,

For an added check run an online virus scan, you can use one of the 2 below,
TrendMicro's HouseCall
ActiveScan

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program
Download and install Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

Remeber to Check Windows for updates

Probably a good time to create a new restore point See Here Name it clean or something like that,
