This is my first post here and I do hope that someone will be able to help me with a confusing problem:

Windows Update tells me that I have two Downloads (Office Security updates) available:

I am running Vista Home Premium with Office 2003 SP3 already installed.

When I try to install these two patches I get the following messages:

KB943985

Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key -

UNKNOWN\.wll\Word.Addin.8\ShellNew.
Verify that you have sufficient permission to access the registry.
--------

KB947355

Error 1402. Setup cannot open the register key -

HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\CLSID\{CC2C83A6-9BE4-11DO-98E7-00C04FC2CAF5}\SingleChangeHook

Verify that you have sufficient permission to access the registry.

-------

I have tried several times without success and have now manually downloaded these two patches to my desktop but still can't install them.
I operate as Administrator, I have set VISTA UAC to OFF, I have cleared 'SoftwareDistribution' and restarted 'WindowsUpdates' in 'Services' as suggested by MS. Nothing will let me install the downloads and I'm now hitting the wall!

Is there a simple explanation, please??

Hello hansh,
Try turning the UAC on.
Sometimes you will get the access denied, or similar error, when the UAC is turned off.
You will have to give permission to install the updates, and you can turn UAC off after the updates are installed.
With the UAC turned off you do not have full administrator privileges.

Appreciate your response, hfcg!

It did not make any difference on its own, but I then went into the registry and changed permissions, audit & ownership for the two keys.
That worked perfectly!!!
If anyone wants to know how to change permissions etc, send me an e-mail or post here.

I downloaded another patch and now have a third problem which I will tackle as soon as possible.

If I can't sort it out, I'll come back via another post.

Again,......thanks a million!!

That was 18 mths ago and I can't remember what I did in the registry.
